According to several sources MP's are allowed to receive up to an extra £10,000 for working from home. Apparently the money is to allow them to purchase PC equipment for themselves and their staff and for heating, phone bills and electricity etc.

This £10,000 limit has been applied right across the board without any real checks surely a recipe for greed and disaster.

I work for the Civil service and most of us are getting the princely sum of around £40 to cover costs of any additional PC equipment etc. Also i would suspect that a lot of those MP's and their staff already have laptops such as surface Pro's.

What do most of forum think of this?

I’m getting pressure sores and RSI sat working away at my makeshift home office . I’m pretty sure our political elite deserve every penny so as they can do the right thing and bulk buy PPE on Amazon and donate it. Good hearted souls that they are .

It has been looked at and decided by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.

Who are they?

"IPSA is independent of Parliament and the Government. This allows us to take decisions about the rules on business costs and expenses and on MPs’ pay ourselves, without interference."

I don’t begrudge them if it goes towards remote working and setting their staff up for the best way of helping their constituents during this time. The vulnerable casework has gone through the roof and they will be better placed to help them.

A lot do good work for their community. Some not so much.

I'm trying not to be too judgemental seeing as they've said they will pay 80% of peoples wages if they lose income. If this helps us to keep control over the country and the government running its not too bad I don't think.

It's not like the money is being diverted away from the NHS as they will get everything they need I'm sure. Open mind here

Pretty sure the £10K is to cover the cost of their staff too who aren't centrally paid either. When an mp loses their seat the staff they employ lose their jobs.

Iam not sure they need £10k but........

I am now working full time from home assume it may last 12 weeks or ? So still in full pay and as per the last 2-3years drop off about £5 of tins etc into local supermarket food bank drop off every weekend and that will continue

Have had a few run ins with the tax man last few years so here is a question if any tax advisor can maybe help

1- working from home 50 hours a week at present so internet , electricity etc etc being used like never before - can this be claimed as a tax allowance as it is the government who are dictating I work from home

Well I'm going to have to put a claim in for appox £50 due to having to buy IT equipment my work couldn't supply as I am now working from home, will I be reimbursed? Not a chance! As it is all from ebay so no receipts etc, but worth it for my own comfort

And from this post it looks like you're basically justifying the 10k (if it's actually true).

I think it's disgusting tbh. I'd be amazed if each MP and their staff didn't all have laptops already and any WFH requirements would be sorted out by their retrospective IT departments. I've never worked anywhere where I've had to fork out in order to work at home (and that includes local government).

If true, it should be stopped immediately and whoever sanctioned it should resign immediately.

No they don't, they get an allowance of upto that figure to be able to cover any additional costs that their staff incur in homeworking and all receipts are in the public domain for scrutiny as normal. It's not just 10 grand for the MP.

What I can say is the money is with Local Governments and applications were sent to businesses from 1st of April.

Rishi Sunak has done his part in making the money available. If you want to blame anyone, blame the LG. However, give them more than a week before you start blaming them

That's what I'm saying, as far as I'm aware, he has followed through ie. the funds are now with LG.

I received my letter last Thursday, that was filled in and sent back on Friday. I then received an 'audit' email yesterday morning. Baring in mind that the self-addressed envelope they supplied for return was 2nd class I'd say they're doing ok with timings but obviously we now have a double bank holiday which doesn't help.

With any luck we will start to see some help by the end of next week, hopefully.

Greedy fuckers! As sole director in a one man business i get paid by paye and dividends. I don'y qualify for 80% or loss of profits. So while my business dries up i get Zero help. Was relying upon dividends from shares i own for income and they have all bean cancelled for 2020. Total two faced money grabbing Bastards or what!!

Well put. I've taken a 20% pay cut for the good of my company and to help top up income of others on furlough. I don't care what happens to MPs or footballers.

I read somewhere that it was for their staff to work from home. All MP's and Peers already have laptops and printers in their homes and all consumables are bought by Parliament for them so they don't claim on their expenses for consumables

I have followed the CBILS url on the government website which says that the loans will be distributed through recognised lenders.

On a parallel thread to this it has been confirmed that the applications I refer_ed to earlier aren't waiting. They have been denied.

So there goes that theory.

It's fake news they only get up to that amount for IT for working from home or setting up to open parliament via IT . Most are saying they already have ipads ready so don't need the grant.

Since parliament resumes in virtual form on 21 April, one assumes they will get their grant immediately while businesses go under waiting for money expected in June if ever? Sweet.
