Tigers have 5% dna difference to domestic cats, at the moment there is no evidence it can pass to your cat at home, that said, they also told us no other animal can get the virus a few weeks back so the information is changing all the time.

What is more scary is the fact the tiger keeper was symptomsless and had the virus and had minimal contact with the animals so it had been passed on so easily.

I can see a lot of mammals being able to contract the virus, it's too early to say what can and can't at the moment

If you consider the fact that a tiger or lion is a massive investment for a zoo then can understand why the zoo would take precautions to safe guard its investment. They are more than likely being overly cautious and it's being blown out of proportion, to scare folks...remember fear sells news..

Yes the loss of apex preditors can have massive, and sometimes complex, detrimental impact on the environment.

Probably the best example of this is Yellowstone National Park in the US. The wolves were hunted to extinction and this allowed the elk population to grow out of control leading to overgazing and gradual loss of tree and shrub coverage and massive drop in beaver population. The reduction in beaver numbers then had knock on effects for human populations downstream of the park in terms of increased flooding risk.

Since wolves have been reintroduced the ecosystem is gradually pulling back into balance. The wolve control the elk numbers, trees then get a chance to grow, allowing beaver numbers to increase and resumme there work creating ponds etc and flooding from this rain catchment area has been reduced.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_coronavirus

I shall leave this here as I said on another post just because they've tested positive doesn't meant its covid 19

It wouldn't surprise me if every mammalian species has a type of corona virus. It just hasn't been documented yet. The tests aren't 100% reliable in detecting precisely covid 19. False positives and false negatives it's the only tool we have so far besides sending blood off to check for viral counts and typing of the virus.

Forgetting there's milder forms of human coronaviruses, every year we shrug off colds and flu like ailments without knowing exactly what we've had. Because they are rarely an issue to barely even warrant a lockdown, healthcare is to stay rested and hydrated. People went about their ways going to work with a cold or feeling flued up not caring in this world what they have just infected everyone else with. Forgetting people with weaker immune systems can't handle them well even if it's a simple cold virus.

I hope for the future people would be more considerate about leaving the house when they are sick no matter what's making them sick if it's contagious stay home!

If scientists keep looking they will find the viruses it's highly probable they will discover many more strains and types of corona and many more of other viruses too. We only take notice when it causes sickness not when it has no noticeable effect.

As I have been saying there's quite a few types of coronaviruses related to individual species only, don't assume if you're precious feline family member is testing positive with a swab test that it's covid 19. Isolating one strain in a test kit will be extremely difficult or nigh impossible. It takes a plethora of equipment to determine 1 strain.

Scientists have already explained it can't do animal trials of the vaccine because it doesn't infect non humans. That's why human testing has began already there's no other way.

The deaths of people intruding into their natural environment is whilst sad for the families a tiny percentage of the numbers of such magnificent creatures that 'man'/ some men slaughter for cultural bullshit reasons and or to be macho..

Where man goes they change the natural order, respect that there are very real issues for people trying to eke out a living for their own and the clashes that occur with some animals..

The arrogance that every creature is there to be exterminated so that we as a species can do what the fuck we like is sickening..

If anything this virus should serve as a wake up to that because we are not the untouchable that some think..

"says the woman prepared to put her family at risk for an easter meet up"

What has that to do with anything she said, snide jibe there.

Its documented that the genetic pool is dwindling amongst animals causing sickness and weaknesses to viruses allowing them to become easily infected than they would with healthier bodies.

The fact that humans decrease wildlife populations to low numbers shrinks the gene pool breeding in genetic mutations that would cause immune weaknesses.

The closer the genetic relation the sicker an animal will be down the line of genetics. Only have to take a look at pedigree dogs to see that.

Terms of genetics and viruses black and tan breeds such as rottweilers and dobermans the gene coding that produces black and tan coat inhibits the production of antibodies for parvo virus, no matter how many vaccinations the dog receives. If it wasnt for the gene that produces black and tan dogs they would benefit from vaccinations for parvo.

Humans killing off significant numbers of wildlife especially in a focused area destroys available genepools.

Confusing post on meets.

I wonder if animals in captivity are kept in smaller spaces in captivity and closer proximity causing more chance of disease. I will never forget the tiger that I saw in captivity forever patrolling his small perimeter. Some admired and swooned. I just preyed that the keepers had not made a mistake or got complacent with the doors. Set them all free in the wild is my motto. Too dangerous to keep them near cities. If there is an escape a small child or adult could be eaten or poisoned.

Stress induces disease and even death.

Animals weren't meant to be in cages.

For some species their chance of survival depends on captivity but that is only down to humans taking over their environment and hunting them. If it wasn't for that they wouldn't need to be kept in captivity.

A lot of species that are critically endangered most people know nothing about. Just like the pygmy hog, it hasn't been successful in trying to breed them in captivity. There are approximately 200 adult pygmy hogs left and humans taking away habitat and hunters poaching them, other animals preying on them have left this population of animals on the brink for decades. Captivity won't save this species it will disappear just as the Tasmanian tiger did, the last known animal captured and lived it's last days caged than in the wild. Irony of it all their prey was kangaroo and wallabies and people complain about over population when nature had it in balance.

Yellowstone reintroduced wolves and balance was restored to the whole ecology but sadly there will be no reintroduction of the Tasmanian tiger it's gone, it's extinct! Humans are to blame.

Elephants faced extinction and humans forced evolution. Could you ever have imagined a man made evolution just by chance in a matter of decades not millennias?

These animals poached for their ivory left tuskless ones to breed and now the species will thrive because they no longer have tusks.

Set them free is a nice sentiment, but it's unlikely they'd survive in the wild if bred in captivity.

And there you have the quandary. Many of the zoo's have their breeding programmes to ensure the species survives. Longer term it would be good to be able to release them back into the wild, but they need to be conditioned to that behaviour. Can't help thinking that sometimes species are being kept alive for human amusement/achievement rather than ecological benefit.

Damned if we do as they will be slaughtered for 'sport', the alleged potency of some of their body parts, ornaments etc and if we keep them captive we change over time their ability to survive in the wild and create stressed creatures that are not meant to be caged..

They really need to stop putting those zoos near housing estates. I would imagine the smell of aminal sh1t must be horrendous for the residents.

Your right though the tigers would be much better off being transported back to India en masse. These villagers living in straw huts on the edge of the jungle currently dont have any jobs money or food. Its a win win as a new food source for both sides and survival of the fittest.

Let me know when you run for parliment and you will get my vote.

As an aside, Colchester Zoo is at risk of permanent closure. What will happen to those animals. I hope the fences are not left in disrepair. Very worrying"

they would not leave the animals there to fend for themselves

"Not sure if helpful but it is interesting .. could it wipe out the big cats ?

Id be more worried about losing the big cats than losing people, just saying

Put the buggers back in the jungle where they belong...best all round... Then people near zoos can sleep at night with windows open .. it's a worry

Well I am guessing that tigers can pass Corona to humans..

As humans supposedly passed to tigers.. In all likelihood if I worked at a zoo I would flee..

Very very worrying..
