Will the government sanction a ban that pays them so highly in tax at a time when the national debt is higher than post 1945? I doubt it!

What a load of nonsense. If you have weak lungs, COPD, heart disease or asthma - the risk is the same regardless of whether you smoke or not. I know plenty of smokers could out run the Netflix non smokers. Another one of those ‘more likely to be stabbed if you carry a knife’ for DM reader mentality

I would find it hard to believe the lungs of a a smoker would be in the same condition to those of a non smoker.

Maybe I’m missing something here.. but isn’t it pretty obvious that if your a smoker your lungs aren’t exactly gonna be top notch?!

couple, us we him her.

It's a similar reason why smokers are more susceptible to thing's like asbestosis although that's more to do with plaque buildup and the tar in the lungs giving the asbestos fibres better cohesion.

Ultimately I'd rather face covid with healthy lung's.

Unfortunately as an asthmatic and someone who has been in the building trade for 36 years my lungs are fucked.

I believe its usually argued that a smoker has paid for their treatment on the NHS?

A smoker is not more likely to catch but is more likely to use the NHS services

Its It's often debated on fab that no subsection of the population

Poor diet , smokers, zero exercise, cyclists, climbers

Should be refused or pay extra for the potential additional risk they pose to the NHS services

Are you suggesting this perhaps should now change ?

I dread to think what fab forums will say if weight is mentioned

Just so you know my opinion

There is a runaway train

Set of points

1 lever you and a woman next to the lever

If you do nothing 1000 people die 10 children 1 paedophile

If you push the lady

The lever moves 800 people die 6 children 2 paedophiles and a murderer

The lady you push also does she killed her two children

Ie I have not a fucking clue anymore

I read more men died as they had high blood pressure"

I understand more men smoke than women

I also understand smoking causes high blood pressure due to hardening the blood vessels preventing dialation

Central

I've not seen a wealth of published peer reviewed evidence yet, to make my own conclusions. What we sometimes think is a commonsense perspective may not be - in this instance because few of us understand how this virus attacks and affects our lungs. What if smokers gain an advantage to the rest of us, perhaps as their lungs have been primed somehow?

Always be led by robust evidence. Correlations between some countries, like China, having greater proportions of male smokers who died, may simply be a correlation.

Smokers will already have done the damage and stopping smoking now will make bugger all difference.

This smacks of an interested party using the current situation to promote a cause.

And I'm a non smoker.

Moot point research shows lungs do start recovery from the last cigarette

How that effects blood pressure I have not read one can extrapolate from the data however that vascular muscular dialation would improve

Of course the elephant in the room regardless of incidental blood pressure is

At what point with very stretched resources do medical operations decide if a persons lifestyle should impact their right to limited resources

Its established that some smokers accept they are doing harm and accept something is going to kill them why not tobacco

Now with that reasonable attitude it is understandable that some would choose a non smoking asthmatic over a smoker when given the moral ultimatum

Is that right ?

See above where I'm absolutely not qualified to make that decision

I was answering your comment about more men smoke than woman.

It was a statement from me that it isn't what I read. That's it.

PS Non smokers get blood pressure too.

If people give up smoking that's a win - if people have healthier lungs with which to fight off and infection that's a win.

How about people who through choice decide not to undertake any form of exercise that would improve heart fitness though choice remain sedentary and by choice eat foods that science has highlighted poor for heart health

My take

I think smokers and those I describe above perfectly entitled to their lifestyles

I think statistically both groups at increased and equal risk

I think one needs to be careful which group of addicts

We could quite possibly include alcohol here

I think we need to be careful about victimising one group of addicts or lifestyles

I may advocate a particular lifestyle however I do not show disdain for those who want to risk their lives in their particular way

I risk my life in other ways

My cooking for starters

However whilst in unprecedented times

Note I said be careful not we should or should not

Just a quick search . . .

The cost of smoking According to the Government’s Tobacco Control Plan for England, smoking costs our economy in excess of £11bn per year. Of this, £2.5bn falls to the NHS, £5.3bn falls to employers, and £4.1bn falls to wider society. It is also estimated that smoking-related health conditions creates a demand pressure on local councils of £760m a year forsocialcare services.10‘Action on Smoking and Health’ (ASH) has developed a ‘Ready Reckoner’ tool to estimate the economic costs of smoking to each localeconomy.1
