Well, Sweden is much more sparsely populated than the UK and living alone is normalised over there in a way that it isn't in the UK.

We have 6x the population in half the land mass of Sweden.

They are only recording cases of those that die directly of COV-19 and expected to die under normal circumstances.

Time will tell I imagine.

Smaller and generally more healthy population with better healthcare ?

Maybe they feel they can cope with the numbers in the first wave whe ea we will need two or even three waves.

Very likely the road we would have taken but for media pressure.

Hindsight will be a wonderful thing but invaluable for the next vurus.

Actually Swedish govern is ready for a u-turn uk-style. Löfven declared that Sweden will have thousands of deaths and is preparing new emergency measures, including having the power to bypass the parliament to implement new restrictions.

We are counting those who tested positive for coronavirus, which isn't quite the same as counting those who died from it.

We can't if you want an honest answer. People could have had the virus since 2019 and as and when death occurs they will test positive for coronavirus. That doesn't necessarily mean they died from it.

It's worth considering the spread of the population when looking at national population. I would guess the south of Sweden is roughly similar to Yorkshire or Devon people/m2. The cities are just as dense as London or Leeds. Stockholm, Malmo and Gotenburg are large cities by European standards. The north of Sweden is very sparsely populated.

It is all about the population density hence why sweden dont do the same as england, italy and spain also having it as business as usual is the best policy during this influenza period too.

swedens death rate is higher than all of its scandi neighbours... norway, finland and denmark

there is beginning to be a backlash over the way the swedish govt are handling this! it looks like they are keeping on with the herd immunity stretegy the uk and the dutch were doing until they did their u-turns a few weeks ago

Sweden had implemented effective contact tracing for those known to be infected.

Testing and contact tracing, with isolation, are essential parts of the response. It keeps the focus on those who are a major risk. Swedish society is always probably more socially responsible than in the UK.

So the Swedish PM has now told Swedes to "prepare for thousands of deaths"

Looks like this freedom thingy isn't going to end well.

"

According to the reliable data plotted on graphs 8 and nine here

http://nrg.cs.ucl.ac.uk/mjh/covid19/#covid-eu-norm2

Sewden continues to match other countries with similar geographical spreads of population.

As the good comments/interpretations below the graphs say the figures are inconsistent across all nations.

In comparison to other countries does Sweden have a healthy population and are Swedes an older population? Is Swedens health care system comparable to, say, Germany?

Spain was late with the lockdown (should have done it at least a week earlier) and by then the infection rate had spiralled out of control.

As seems to be the case in other countries as well it took 3 weeks to see the results.

Now Spain's daily infection and death rates are slowing. So yes Spain is finally starting to cope, but it will be a long haul.

It seems that Sweden has it all to come.
