Basic background

I knew we were being made redundant end of March 2020 since last year so took steps to retrain and gain qualifications ready to break into a new area of the job market.

Now the Virus has shut down everything baring supermarkets and industry I've found my new profession near impossible to get into because places just ain't hiring yet.

I do feel lucky though as I have found a job, nothing I would of ever contemplated doing but it's a job all the same and I've only been unemployed 2 days so given the market outlook at the moment I think I've done bloody well.

I know a lot of people must be in a similar situation and really feel for them especially if they haven't been able to be furloughed etc.

How are others finding the job market. I'd guess terrible most probably. I've probably done 80 plus applications and finally got one phone interview and job offer but if it wasn't for this Virus mess it's a position I wouldn't have normally gone for.

It's amazing how quickly your life choices can change.

Sounds shit I think a lot of people are going to be in a similar position. I have been self employed for past 20 years up until 2 years ago then started working for one of the largest companies on the planet. Have to say, I’m glad I did.

Two of my kids both having job seeking issues. One had a job with the MOD accepted at Christmas but actual hiring process is going so slow they are still waiting. This is not helping.

Other one is a trainee teacher. Had a job interview at a cafe and literally had been accepted and manager put the contract on the table for her to sign and got a call from head office saying “no hires!” She literally was 30 seconds away from being hired!

I’ve no idea even what the process is would be at the moment with things like jobseekers? How can you be actively looking for a job when there is a lockdown? I mean of course you can still be looking, but what if there are no jobs in your skill area.

I guess there are all those “low skilled” jobs that we’ve now suddenly realised are actually pretty key. All those ones we pay fuck all to buy without we’d grind to a halt.

Sorry... I’ve not really added anything useful. All I can say is hope the interview goes well.

This is the time for adaptability and those able, and willing, are an example for young and old
