It's been suggested for a while by WHO that face

Masks are neither necessary or effective ( that I found curious)

I read today they are now not so certain

One part of data that actually concerned me was their lack of knowledge with regards droplet projection distances and time virus can spend in air

It seemed new knowledge to them that a sneeze can project up to 8 feet

Now seriously I assumed that was established knowledge

Mythbusters ( dont laugh their methodology was usually pretty diciplined) illustrated projections from sneezing fat in excess of 8 ft

Also watch their illustration of how snot infects a room luminous die fucking everywhere

I'm now convinced masks can play an important part with the correct hygienic use even if conversely it prevents air contamination from an asymptomatic

I'm very much in favour/ endorse listening and following expert medical advice

However some bits I heard were frighteningly lax

I said from the beginning something did not add up

From world response either the virus was not serious as reported OR we were treating potential human to human infections far to lighty

The miss match was indeed correct and sadly and still imo we are not being adequate hygiene and testing actions

Oh and no I really dont know I'm as confused as anyone else

Should I shop? Should I touch anything. Does the virus spread from the milk Bob in front of me hands to checkout and onto me (I use glove and self serve only and wash everything at home) am I vulnerable walking 3m behind some one are shop ventilation units good or spreader

This is i just dont know thread

All I can say is I bought a couple of boxes of FFP3 masks form screwfix when the experts were saying they were useless

Never beleived the first story.

Put 5 people in a room one with a cold - allow one to wear a mask - I kinda know without thinking who would be the most likely NOT to catch it.

(yea yea we know they could also touch something I'm just talking about the mask)

If it walks like a duck . . .

Personally I think masks would only be noticeably effective if people are in close quarters with each other (on the London Underground for example).

Just walking around the high street or supermarket, not so much.

But yes, there is plenty of misinformation and flip flopping of opinions as well as a gross amount of misinformation out there

Masks aren't to keep you safe they're there to prevent you from infecting others.

Different masks have different levels of effectiveness.

If you reduce the spread it lessen the demands on hospitals and they're able to cope better. The better they can cope the more likely they are at saving preventable deaths.

Indeed however

Airborne infections of eyes ears and cuts would be statistically very low

The lungs here being the organ this virus prefers to reproduce in use approx 10 litres of air per minute mitigating this pathway would significantly reduce the direct route

Also as mentioned this disease is very asymptomatic thus if everyone entering a shop had to wear a mask of any kind their droplet emissions into air onto surface and products would reduce dramatically

Again we know the mask will not eradicate however it would almost certainly mean a lower infection rate maybe hasten the relaxation of house arrest

By my last point I mean

At some point we will be released

I suggest if released without masks we will relapse

Masks may (might possibly) be the difference between reverting back to current lock down (or worse) or maintaining a little more freedom?

You need at least an FFP3 mask for it to be fully effective, anything less will likely lead to complacency therefore increasing your chances of getting it. Of course any mask as a chance of lessening the risk should you still behave as if you don’t have a mask on be all the evidence shows that people get sloppy when they think they are safe.

It does seem logical that a mask would impede your breath from travelling as far as it would without one

I've also heard that they could be useful in that they prevent you from touching your face too much

They are low yes, but still high enough for pink eye and conjunctivitis to be listed as possible symptoms for coronavirus when it is transmitted through the eye.

yes if people are sneezing or coughing around you i can see them working but not much good just walking around the streets keeping a safe distance.

I'm not sure what your debate is ?

We absolutely know it can transmit via other pathways however that fact does not dismiss or reduce the potential importance of mitigating ine of the absolutely most vulnerable pathways ?

If you're suggesting yes masks would help perhaps also eye goggles and gloves alongle with hygienic use directions to improve the effectiveness you would have my total agreement

You can buy lots of masks from Amazon (I just looked) and they ALL come from China in around a month.

... and its very easy to stamp EN149 CE FFP3 onto any old bit of non-woven material

There's no evidenced that a scarf won't at least reduce the viral load if you walk into be air where someone has just coughed or sneezed so unless it's disproved is it not at least a sensible precaution.

I will be wearing one and getting some washable masks to wear in the supermarket.

It might not work but nothing to lose.

Surgical masks are not particularly good filters either

OK, lets settle this..

Masks form a short term and limited protection from virus and germs, they are like a sieve to micro organism..

However our bodies are adept at dealing with most virus and germs we breath in, mucus in our mouth and nosee catch the blighters on its sticky surface and send it off to our stomach to be neutralised in an acid bath..

Medical personnel use Masks to shield them from droplets of spittle from patients when in close proximity should the patient cough or talk.

Sneezing I will come onto later..

Masks are only good for short term use as they themselves are a breeding ground for germs and do not prevent virus being inhaled through them.

By wearing a mask, the action of respiration will make the mask moist, germs and virus love that.

By breathing in, you pull positive pressure onto the exterior of the mask, slowly drawing germs nd virus through where they then can be inhaled in the moist air and straight into your lungs..

Sneezing, well that meand you hve the common cold or the black plague so I wouldn't worry about sneezes too much, although please still catch them, Sneezing on me is disgusting..
