Advice on travelling to the US

I'm travelling to Seattle at some point this year and I'm wondering what to do for a cell phone. It may be possible for my provider here to arrange for mine to be usable in the US, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be simpler to just buy a cheap pre-pay phone to use while I'm there. Any thoughts?

I went to Florida in September and used my phone provider there (Three), I was on roaming and it had the feel at home rate, which was as if I never left the UK. Signal was actually good and I stayed within my plan.

When we went I kept my UK iPhone, and left my data roaming switched off, but as everywhere had wifi, it wasn't an issue.
