Etiquette for Checking Referral?

What do you think the etiquette is to confirm or ask for more details on a referral?

Specifically if you are considering a meet person A and see that they have a one line referral from person B, can you reach out to person B and ask for more information?

We have, and we're glad we did. We found out some information about the couple we were contemplating meeting. And because of the referral decided not to meet them. It turned out that the female of the couple was very limited in her participation. ( on three different occasions.)
