I still can't grasp even as a woman why their views on freedoms is so different than ours. It's like a collective view on things. Instead of individual fortitude.

There isn't a country on the planet that has the same freedom's we do. Why is it everyone is trying so hard to get in here, and not into the European nations or the UK. Problem were having currently is a bunch of democrats (socialistic asshats) want to turn this country into the third world shitholes they came from.

"You take everything the government says as fact."

No, we don't. You also seem to think that there is only one government in the whole of the UK, which I realise is a different concept for... ah, you're American. So you get it.

"It's a collective hive attitude. No individual thought process."

Explain how, please.

"We may have high covid outbreak but we like to live without government control."

Oh. Of course it's about Covid. Believe me, we have plenty of Covidiots on this side of the pond too. In fact the US and UK are probably far more similar than you'd imagine on the subject. We have a lot of science denialism here too.

*Freedoms. And I'd like a citation for that.

"Why is it everyone is trying so hard to get in here, and not into the European nations or the UK."

I'm guessing you're a right-winger. You should probably read up on what our right-wingers say. Because we are, apparantly, being inundated with refugees.

"Problem were having currently is a bunch of democrats (socialistic asshats) want to turn this country into the third world shitholes they came from."

The US Democratic party would be considered centre-right in most European countries. But I'm curious- what Democrats are you referring to? Which ones have come from "third world shithole" and intend to turn the US into such a "shihole?" And which of those countries was "socialist?"

If your asked to stop or any order by a cop , you do it. Something is going on in the area and they are responding. But stupid people (black and white) argue and fight and end up getting shot. Or sometimes people get caught in the crossfire.

Yes you have to be 21 to drink in the US. Gun ownership is legally 16 but I had a rifle at 10. I knew gun safety and responsibility before that. "Black" people as you put it go anywhere they want whenever they want

The looters, and anarchist are a mixture of people. (Antifa, BLM) who want nothing more than to make trouble. Tell me what the hell a 75" tv has to do with someone's rights being infringed on. Or burning down a minority-owned and run store.

Also were not fighting over trump vs Biden. Nothing has been done yet. The democrats has created a narrative that says the Republicans are going to do this. But its not happening. We're going to keep going day by day. Everything you seem to believe or see on TV is one sided (one way or the other) there is no news. Its opnion everywhere

The Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), which regulates firearms at the federal level, requires that citizens and legal residents must be at least 18 years of age to purchase shotguns or rifles and ammunition. All other firearms — handguns, for example — can only be sold to people 21 and older.

Couldn’t agree with you more.

If people still believe that Doris Johnson and that idiot sidekick Matt Hancock really are in charge of running the UK, you ought to self-isolate for the rest of your days.

Ruining livelihoods, crippling businesses, forcing people to stay away from your nearest and dearest, putting massive amounts of stress and strain on families, and all for a virus that has something like a 98% survival/recovery rate.

Happy Christmas to our swinging Americans too x

Again, I agree.

The explosion of ‘food banks’ here in the UK over the last 12-18 months is phenomenal, but let’s all forget about the poverty and all other associated illnesses and let’s instead focus on closing all independent businesses and keep the huge internationals open and thriving instead.

The virus is here to stay so how about we all focus on just being sensible and get left alone to live our own lives rather than be dictated to be these corrupt politicians.

Can’t stand any of them myself..all pigs with noses firmly in the trough and puppets for the Higher Order

Now you know why US is not currently in a lockdown. Different states. Different governors. Ones that believe that the solution in lockdowns is going to be worse then the virus for small businesses. Atm there is no balanced solutions.

I think you have to look at the way America was founded (Pilgrims emigrating etc) and the way America grew (Wild West etc).

America grew out of pioneering, adventurous and Frontiersmanship origins. The type of people who thrived in this environment would have been independent, single minded, confident. I think this explains a bit why Americans tend to be more outgoing than other nations, more natural showmanship and a greater desire for individual freedoms and liberties. I think an example of the last point is the hyper Capitalistic economic model and the attitudes towards healthcare, specifically a free at point of delivery service (such as the NHS of the UK)

Not all people in England think or feel the same, as I'm sure is true of everyone in the states.

As for Scotland, if they want to leave the UK I think it's their call and I wouldn't object. (Until they start removing actual land at the borders then I'd have environmental concerns

There isn't thousands of people in camps in Calais anymore. Yes they were/are in Europe but desperately trying to get into the UK,

There are thousands of people from Tunisia, Syria and other non EU countries risking their lives desperately trying to get into any European country. Lots of them in camps near borders but not yet on EU soil.

There are thousands already in camps on the Greek islands and it's still causing issues between Greek & Turkey (just one example)

Hence I used the word 'and'

to highlight there are people desperately trying to get into the EU, but, also even having made it to the EU they still try to get across and into U.K.

Yup. You hit it on the head. Britain, and even more Scotland, take better care of their people collectively instead of letting a dog eat dog approach.

Speaking as someone who grew up dirt poor in a small town in America and now lives in Scotland, it’s freeing not having to worry that an unexpected medical bill will bankrupt you or that the government is close enough to the people and not ruled by big money (dog eat dog and all) for me to have a say in what/how they do things. The quality of life is miles better America for those in the middle class and lower. Good education, good social safety net and good people instead of self-centred, self-serving assholes ruining it for the rest of us and calling it “freedom”

"I still can't grasp even as a woman why their views on freedoms is so different than ours. It's like a collective view on things. Instead of individual fortitude.

Yup. You hit it on the head. Britain, and even more Scotland, take better care of their people collectively instead of letting a dog eat dog approach.

And yet we have to sit at the head of the table on the world stage. The money and costs defending world interests could be better spent on American people not nato don't you think ?

Victory may be asking a lot. Since 1945, the United States has very rarely achieved meaningful victory. The United States has fought five major wars — Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan — and only the Gulf War in 1991 can really be classified as a clear success.15 Feb 2018

And yet we have to protect other countries while doing said wars because of a commitment to Nato. IMO we don't need Nato it is a cash cow that can be spent elsewhere.

I agree and the new muppet is no better. When he says we have to take our seat at the head of the table in international problems and policies. That is putting the world first over our interests.

We need to think more america first and not worry about global issues. Seems the rest of the world are more concerned about themselves so we should do the same. Straighten everything out here first. Trump tried and failed now we are going back to the global stage. Need better leaders.

"The migrant camp at Calais and the thousands of immigrants desperate to get into Europe would certainly disagree with

"There isn't a country on the planet that has the same freedom's we do. Why is it everyone is trying so hard to get in here, and not into the European nations or the UK. Problem were having currently is a bunch of democrats (socialistic asshats) want to turn this country into the third world shitholes they came from."

Not all people in England think or feel the same, as I'm sure is true of everyone in the states.

As for Scotland, if they want to leave the UK I think it's their call and I wouldn't object. (Until they start removing actual land at the borders then I'd have environmental concerns "

All them immigrants want 2 come here coz 'not so GREAT BRITAIN' has gone soft, we're losing all our traditions & our beliefs all becoz we might offend someone,

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A POLITICIANS LIEING ??

I don't think the rest of the world sees your foreign policy as "helping", it's more destabilising and disruptive.

The US has by far the biggest defence budget in the world. If I was from there I would definitely want that reduced and more funds allocated to healthcare, infrastructure, social welfare, support for those who are most vulnerable in society etc

The USA has always put itself first. Every president every time. Strategic wars ,protection of oil interests, political ideologies. In WW2 the isolationist movement was very much against involving the U S in the war against fascism, like the views being expressed by some on here today.

It was probably the last "Just war " a fight that had to be fought.

Also the USA charged the UK for all help with armaments etc. A bill we eventually paid off in 2006.

Wow what a great generalisation. That’s like saying all Americans are fat because of the amount of sugar that’s in everything or that all Americans are dumb because of the southern states.

Now. Let’s get to the pandemic side of things which you brought up.

Yes we have had 2 lock downs, Wales did 2 weeks, England 4, Scotland I can’t remember and Northern Ireland keeps adding weeks on (yes, 4 countries make up the U.K., it’s not a single place). When this pandemic started I made my own choices, masks weren’t mandatory yet I wore one. Before lockdown it wasn’t mentioned about increasing hygiene in businesses yet I started cleaning after every person using hospital grade anti viral products. I refused to allow anyone in my home before lockdown started. I took the initiative when re Opening my business to put extra precautions in place way before the government gave their points and went way way beyond what the government asked for.

I did this because I care about my family, I want to protect them over anything else.

Have you ever wondered what others think of your government? Up to now the U.K. and most of the world has been laughing at you because of trump and his crazy mind. He really doesn’t care about you, he cares about his pocket. Now we’re laughing because of Biden. Isn’t it embarrassing to have 8 years of people who are on the brink of going to the grave, who are too old to look forward and keep looking at the past?

So before you start generalising and laughing at the U.K. I suggest you take a look at your own home and get it in order first as it’s a sorry mess right now.

I would be inclined to say that Korea (1950-1953) was a "Just War" too, this was American led with UN assistance.

TBH as an Englishman I would think that our colonial past should remain as a reminder, nothing else, of a tyranny against a world that was conquered by a small % of rich capitalist bastards.

I am minded of a convo with an Oirish Chap in Skibbereen who informed me that I was the potato famine and I should be ashamed?

I pointed out that my ancestors in 1845 were lead miners and earned about enough to survive but, if injured or sick, were not paid and eventually evicted to the street.

I was last in the US for 3 months in 2015 and I was aghast at the amount of homeless folk, not in cities but rural places in WI and MN to name but two.

Before you start claiming you need to use your GDP to look after your own may I suggest that a welfare state and healthcare be at the top of the tree when you decommission your Aircraft carriers.

"But none of you can answer that question do we turn our backs on the rest of the world just to appease the world outlook on us.

I don't think the rest of the world sees your foreign policy as "helping", it's more destabilising and disruptive.

The US has by far the biggest defence budget in the world. If I was from there I would definitely want that reduced and more funds allocated to healthcare, infrastructure, social welfare, support for those who are most vulnerable in society etc "

I agree now we having a incoming president telling us it's time we sit at the head of the table on the world stage. That signals more foreign policies. We traded one idiot for another.

Global issues can very rapidly become American issues. We forget the lessons of history all too quickly.

If NATO is so defunct why did the US enact Article 5 and drag everyone else into wars largely of their own creation?

Like it or not, you rely on NATO for your own internal security. We all do.

I think Brits are very laid back.

They put up with pension cuts, tax rises and lately lockdowns.

Look what happens in France for example. Try that shit and they all get together and start smashing things up in mass demonstrations.

They even started burning BMW's in the streets lol.

They clearly won't put up with bull or loss of rights but in the UK people just do nothing and the few that do never will have the numbers behind them for change.

Bottom line you see covid cases rising because the majority of Americans are treating this virus for what it is. Not because of this politician or that one. By now you know we don't take our government control lightly. We like our freedoms and that is the issue. Biden not going to solve this no politician is we either deal with it or die trying. Everything you mentioned except metric system is correct. Easy to solve too take away defense budget. Cut down on NATO And UN funding. Return all troops to US soil. Give all overseas bases back to their respective countries. No more global projection everyone wins.

"I still can't grasp even as a woman why their views on freedoms is so different than ours. It's like a collective view on things. Instead of individual fortitude.

They are used to tipping their cap to an antiquated system of lords and ladies and kissing ass. "

That's an interesting comment and completely incorrect. I had the pleasure of working in the US for a couple of years as a senior manager in a Utility company. I had worked for the same company in the UK for ten years prior to going to the US.

I was shocked at how hierarchical business in the US is. I am sure everyone who worked for me there would have liked my shoes clean if they though it would help get them a promotion. In the whole time I was there I don't think I met a single person who was happy - no-one seems content with what they have and all seem to want more. After 6 months there my boss who was a director walked into the office on a Friday and told me we were going away at the weekend on business. When I told him I couldn't as I already had something arranged he was shocked, there is an expectation that everyone will work seven days a week if the boss asks as everyone brown noses to impress

I enjoyed my time in the US as it was different and I had the opportunity to travel, but live there - NO CHANCE! We have far more freedom in how we live our lives here in the UK than the vast majority of US citizens will ever have.

There isn't a country on the planet that has the same freedom's we do. Why is it everyone is trying so hard to get in here, and not into the European nations or the UK. People die because they have no access to healthcare, women have to go to back street clinics for terminations as middle aged old white men seem to have an opinion about how women treat their own body, you can only get a tertiary education if daddy is rich oh and teachers have to teach young children ‘shoot out’ drills in case someone comes into their school to kill them.... no thanks.

"People die because they have no access to healthcare, women have to go to back street clinics for terminations as middle aged old white men seem to have an opinion about how women treat their own body, you can only get a tertiary education if daddy is rich oh and teachers have to teach young children ‘shoot out’ drills in case someone comes into their school to kill them.... no thanks. "
this , children should be safe inside of school no ifs or buts , guns should be more stringently controlled

Your out of your mind.

Some of the largest cities in America have the strictest gun control laws in the country.(dam near impossible to get a permit to carry let alone purchase one)

And they have the highest level of gun violence there is. Its a proven fact that if you take away the guns from the honest law abiding citizens, the ones with guns will be the criminals. And don't give me a load of snowflake crap about how you don't have gun violence because no-one has guns. They even armed your "bobbies" after a period of no guns because they were outmatched by the bad guys who had guns.

"I still can't grasp even as a woman why their views on freedoms is so different than ours. It's like a collective view on things. Instead of individual fortitude."

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

That’s what watching American TV taught me.

Guess you didn’t watch that show.

I fucking love America. Bonkers but in a good way. We’d move there in a heartbeat.

Several key differences for you OP which might be why things seem so different and difficult to come to terms with. America polices by force, the UK is police by consent - this is huge in and of itself. There is no gun culture over here and police aren’t routinely armed (our armed police are closer to your SWAT teams and train with military special forces). That creates a very different dynamic when it comes to police interactions, our police aren’t under the constant fear that their subject may be armed, which is why your police come across as so heavy handed. This will influence everything else I feel. You guys are afraid (or rather fully respect) of the police, whereas we don’t really have any respect for them anymore. Especially since they’ve become politicised.

The first amendment tho....my god I fucking love it. I would kill to have something so powerful written into uk legislation.

Like others have said, Americans are fiercely independent because of your history. I think it’s a truly admirable trait. Don’t change

You can't have the first amendment without protection from the second amendment.

I 100% agree. Government should be afraid of its people, not the other way around. Believe me I’m a big advocate of the second amendment too. But the first is a glorious thing

Sort of.

I have blood family as well as family. The second will be back to back with me protective of blood.

If that makes sense

"Oh wait you can't cross the road here you will get done for J walking.....

Have to be over 21 to drink but 16 to own a gun

Oh black people don't leave your house a cop will shoot you...

Really and you are making comments about the UK and EU when your own country is in such a fucking mess people fighting each other over trump and Biden

21 to drink

18 to have a fire arm.

All of a sudden election over no one getting shot by police."

In around half the US states, at a gun show no background checks are done meaning ANYONE can buy a gun.

Even under 18 if you are with a parent!!

I live in both the UK and USA and Gun shows are a regular occurrence where I am in the states.....

Scares me tbh

West Wales

Chicago with a population of around three million has approx a third more murders than the whole of the U.K. with its population of sixty seven million has in a year.

The U.K. murder rate has also nearly halved over the last 10-15 years.

Tell me again how guns help & why here in the U.K. we are at the mercy of gun toting criminals?

Then don't go to gun shows. If they scare you, avoid them. No one is making you go.

Illinois (Chicago) is one of the strictest gun control cities in the US. Average law abiding citizens cannot carry. Or its very difficult to purchase and carry. The criminals have more than the police and the law abiding ones together. No wonder its higher than everyone else especially a postage stamp size country like the UK.

Chicago is a democratic city has been for a long time. It is also one of the most segregated cities in the US. Poverty rates are high gang warfare is common. It's not a gun issue it is a social issue. Where is all the social justice entities? Why are they not in Chicago? Do ordinary citizen have the right to carry to protect their families yes they do no matter what color of your skin is. Hands down a racial social issue but the media don't bring that up do they? Just the gun violence.
