New Age Verification Law

Regarding the new Age Verification Law that's due to come into force in April...

Personally, I don't have a problem with the Government seeking to introducing legislation that makes it necessary for porn viewers to verify their age...after all, we ALREADY have a system of age-verification in place for cinema releases, home videos, music and video games, and a system of age-verification, licensing and other controls in place for alcohol, tobacco, cars, guns and medication...

HOWEVER, the problem I have with the new legislation is this:

If I go into my local cinema and buy a ticket for an 18-certificate movie, or go down the pub and order a pint, I'm asked for ID...I hand over my drivers licence or passport as proof of age...and I am duly served by the cashier...

That cashier DOESN'T log my passport details or my drivers license details - not to mention the details of the card I used to make the transaction - on a massive online database alongside a record of my preferences in feature films or alcoholic drinks...

Nor is it likely that someone who hacks into the DVLA database and gains access to my licence details is going to try and extort money from me by threatening to tell my boss about my secret passion for the Aston Martin DB5 or the fact that I pranged my parents' pre-1999 Renault Megane Scenic the week before my driving test...
