Neither. Ford, Toyota and Vauxhall make cheaper just as functional cars. Would never waste money on the brand name premium just for a pointless snob factor.

BMW are fine for a basic car. Then the options list comes out and you find yourself spending £££'s over the odds.

Mercedes are hewn from solid rock. But the dealer network are totally incompetent once they've got your money. Had endless trouble over the years.

Audi are slightly less wanky in the dealership. You pays your money and takes your choice.

I was a BMW man, the last we had was an 325i MSport Touring e46 which I loved. Her cracked the whip and we got an Audi SQ5, the interior is top notch, sound system is immense and it handles very well for an SUV.

Used to very exclusive cars to own but every man and his dog have one I had a c class merc that started to rust by the time I got rid it had more holes in it than the titanic bearing in mind at the time it was 53 plate and was just going on to 6 years old shocking especially when my Astra van of the same age was spotless so I decided to get an e60 525 diesel not much better didn’t rust like the merc but reliability awful never away from the dealership or stealership as it was always massive bills got rid of that after 4 years current car is a boring Kia Sportage yes doesn’t have the so called badge snobbery but who cares lol like a said bmw merc even Audi’s not exclusive enough to many about didn’t a famous comedian once the that the ford escort should be called the ford clitoris because every cunt has one maybe it should be applied to them bmw mercs and Audi’s even rangerovers

Costa Blanca Spain...

Had lots of both over the years, 25 years buying and selling them helped a bit.

In the 80's and 90's I much preferred the BMW's.

These days though I tend to lean towards Mercedes. We have a couple of C class estates and an old SLK that Mrs likes to play with in the summer.

The older C class that we leave in Spain is a 2005 that we have had for over 9 years and has now done 260,000 kms. In all that time we have only spent money on regular service items and one electric window switch.

The newer one is a 2012 and we've had that one for 3 years and again only spent money on servicing and tyres. In that one we can drive from Luxembourg to the Spain/France border on one tank of diesel, just short of 1000 kms.

Our neighbours drive newish BMW's and seem to have problem after problem, mostly electrical.

Agree apart from Jaguars, great cars but let down by horrid alloys.

Always look too small for the cars, with the exception of the new E-pace and F-pace which at least have good options."

BMW. They're cheap(ish, used) and handle like a dream (sometimes with a bit of modifications).

Got a 440i and that inline 6 3.0l is a buttery smooth dream on wheels.

People saying not to waste money on a "premium" brand clearly don't know how a good car handles :D

Once I go electric tho I won't bother, they're soulless and dull so no point spending much money on em.

I’m on my 3rd BMW would be very hard to drive anything else now, they are great value, solid , drive and handle really well. Mercs seem a bit flimsy in comparison and a bit blingy , every 17yrold hairdresser seems to have one

BMW for me. I miss my 530d massively.

Currently drive an Audi A4 which is still nice but I see Audi at the lower end of the premium brands.

Never had the slightest desire to own or even drive either. In fact, have no recollection of having been a passenger in either, or an Audi.

My preference is for Japanese home market vehicles. Designed and built for right hand drive, unlike European LHD stuff bodged for Britain.

I was rather hoping that following Brexit we might get better access to the impressive range of non European vehicles which I see in other right hand drive countries but not holding my breath.

Good luck to all those who get pleasure from German prestige car (including Jaguar)ownership. They live in a different world from me. I like to drive vehicles which are versatile, uncomplicated and easy to maintain.

The industry, however, has other ideas about the market, realising that it largely comprised of image conscious mugs.. ..right across the price range.

To finish your sentence....everything they all look identical, we'll apart from their new van, sorry whatever that box thing is in their electric range.

Even postman Pat wouldn't be seen dead in it.

I wouldn't blame the manufacturers.. Since when did sensible people ever believe published figures.

Since first cars ever hit the road, the figures were over optimistic...

Sorry its stupid humanity

It's happening now with electric cars none reach the range the manufacturer says

More a BMW man over Mercedes but have owned a few of both. Bmw make more sporty feeling drivers cars but you can’t beat Mercedes for comfort and sit and forget driving.

Sold my last bmw beginning of the year as really don’t need two cars right now and not gonna sell my Aston ever.

Interesting comment.

A few years ago I arranged test drives of similar priced/spec offerings from BMW, audi, jaguar and Mercedes.

Audi service was appealing, so walked out before got to rest.

Jaguar drove amazing best blend of comfort, and driving prowess.

Mercedes c class was a very twitchy drive.

BMW 3 series msport felt like a very remote disconnected drive.. Accelerator response was crap.

I bought the jag XE

Best not to go be preconceived perceptions.

Got myself a merc a few months back after always have more economical cars, although have us shots in luxury brand cars. Easily the best and comfiest car I’ve driven in my life so far. Think I’d be struggling to look at any other brand for my next car.

Nothing about image , it’s about value, driving, features and safety for me. I’ve been hit from behind in a BMW , the Japanese car behind me literally disintegrated and was a write off , my rear bumper had a slight scratch. When I’m driving up and down the country and when I had young kids I feel safe and have all the tech I need to plan and enjoy journeys, anything needs looking at it tells me even measuring brake pad wear and warning me a bulb will fail before it fails. There’s a SIM card will dial 899 if I’m every in a bad smash or car fills with water. I have Eco modes to save fuel, limiter to prevent accidental speeding, sports mode I don’t use. The seat will give me a massage on a long journey, climate control adjustable for each passenger. On value , my cars sell for pretty much what I paid for them , the current one has actually increased in value over the last 18 months, compare to Ford or Vauxhall you are losing money so fast on them they are just a bad investment.
