Living in Manchester

Weird place to post this I guess, but I'm moving to Manchester for work and would love to hear recommendations of where to live.

Working in Altrincham so would need to be central or south Manchester really.

I'd be so greatful if anyone has any info on areas to be/areas to avoid kind of thing

Altrincham, Sale, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Didsbury, Northenden and Withington all good for renting and have quite trendy bars and restaurants.

Wythenshawe used to be the biggest council estate in Europe at one point. Now a lot of houses in private hands plus a bit of new building development means cheapish rents.

If you have a bit of extra cash, look at Wilmslow, Hale, Alderley Edge and Knutsford.

From what I can see, Sale and Chorlton look ideal, hard to tell without actually going and seeing these places first hand!

If you choose Chorlton, go top floor and get insurance. It is the most burgled suburb of Manchester.

But it is great

Stretford is only 5 or 10 minutes by bus to Chorlton, but rents come down quite a bit. So have a look round there too.

Will be using public transport, so somewhere close to the metro/a train station is necessary. No idea how reliable buses are.

these are the posh parts. Also worsley. A lot of TV stars and football players live there.

check out the tram route between airport and manchester town centre - you have to change stops but it passes through a few of the places mentioned

It may be worth exploring the idea of renting or sharing a flat in the city and commuting out to Altrincham if where you're working is close to the metrolink stops? A monthly ticket is £88. Didsbury, Sale, Altrincham are all pretty similar (if not higher) rent prices to city centre living, though City centre apartments will be purpose built instead of being converted Georgian and Victorian type houses.

look at rightmove - put in your area and how far away etc - rent or buy - brill site to use
