Just got a new bike and I'm looking for places to cycle.

I'm starting in Shiremoor. Just need somewhere to go.

The river Tyne is nice, but it's a bit far from my starting point.

Had a cycle up towards tynemouth the other day, which was lovely. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the wagon ways so I got lost a couple of times.

What sort of bike have you got and what sort of riding are you considering?

I’ve cycled (touring and mountain biking) pretty much everywhere in the UK

I've got a mountain bike. Mainly looking for back roads that leads to nice open fields or something like that.

Somewhere I can just sit and chill after a long ride or something.

Erm.. best riding I’ve done around Northumberland for gentle roads is on the ‘coasts and castles’ national trail. You could pick it up in Tynemouth and slowly head up to Berwick over 2 or 3 days, then back down the Sandstone Way off road to Hexham. That route going slowly and camping would take 5-7 days. You could get on or off or pick sections as it’s all fairly accessible from railways.

Or for more quiet roads you could follow the ‘Hadrian’s wall cycleway’ between Northumberland and Cumbria
