Holkham Nudist Beach, North Norfolk

North Norfolk

Hello everyone,

I live near Holkham and I visit the nudist beach a handful of times per year (when it’s warm enough).

I thought I’d start a thread for people who have visited, want to visit or who are thinking of visiting or so people can share stories/opinions.

Me and My Girl have been. We are naturist in normal life so we generally only go to beaches where we can ditch the swimwear. It's a nice beach. It's nice knowing it's officially naturist. Not all beaches we go are (however we've never had a problem anywhere as long as your respectful and sensitive to other potential beach users). However parking can be difficult and your a long walk from facilities (although this is fairly normal). Personally for us theirs other beaches we prefer, hence we've only been the once. Its a great beach but we prefer other and living in the Midlands they're all about as far away as easy other.

My main advise is take a windbreak as the cross wind was strong. Aslo respect the environment and stay out of the dunes. The beach is for everyone and we want it to always be there for naturist users.

I thought naturism had been banned there. It’s great news it’s official once again, so we’ll definitely be back there in the summer. A great beach!

"It was my understanding that this beach had been closed to naturists."

It did a few years ago but then the naturist area was reinstated. Having said that it was about 2 years ago last time I went. So I suppose that's a chance it could have been banned yet again I not heard or read anything saying so. So as far as I'm aware (and hope) the closure of naturist area you refer to is no longer in force.

I love swimming nude at the sandy Holkham beach. Nudits should bring a tent or windbreak for shelter against the strong breezes/sun plus fresh water. There is a very good visitor centre but no facilities whatsover on the beach. Also watch out for the broken bits of razor clams on the sand. Dogs and horses are welcome. The nudist beach is about 1.25 miles from a metered carpark through a pine forest. Bear left at the end of avenue road. Enjoy fresh crab after in nearby Wells.

"I thought naturism had been banned there. It’s great news it’s official once again, so we’ll definitely be back there in the summer. A great beach!"

Oh dear. "Naturism banned", " made official again".

How do these mythical concepts persist.

Naturism is legal pretty much anywhere so long as one is not intending to 'cause alarm or distress': S.66.2003 Sexual Offences Act.

A naturist whose intention is going about their business will not be guilty of (any) offence. So places of 'traditional naturist recreation' like Holkham are legal for public nudity. That applies to to the foreshore but not the land adjoining. I'm this case Lord Lester exercises his right to exclude naturists from his land.

'Official Naturist Beach'?

There are not any. That a local Council chooses to erect a sign either 'allowing' naturism or not has no status in law. The former should be viewed as guidance only the latter a form of discrimination.

I’m well aware of the law. I was under the impression Holkham had lost its status as a beach where naturists can strip off without fear of being hassled by the police/wardens/landowners. We only bathe nude on beaches which are described as ‘official’ because it’s hard to relax on a non-official beach due to the UK’s legion of ‘professionally offended’ people. Regardless of whether it’s legal or not, we don’t want to spend our day arguing the finer points of law with someone.

As regards the “ban”, it’s precisely the language that both British Naturism and the Holkham Estate which owns the adjoining land were using, regardless of what the law says. It’s also the language that EDP reports the Crown Estate was using. That makes the concept of banning more than a “mythical concept”.

So too the concept of “official” beaches. Regardless of whether it has any basis in law, it’s the language that’s used: the National Trust refers to Studland as such, BN makes the distinction too.

Hi all

Holman was the first place I stripped on public

Holkams good but the walk is a pain and it is a bit exposed. There is an area for nudists but it's important to know the dunes at the back are private property and the estate that owns them has said no nudists and there are patrols.

Corton is better I think as it's only about 100yatfs from the car park and has more cover from the wind

As I understand Holkham naturist beach was reinstated with help of BN but this implies to the Beach only I think up to the high water mark the Dunes are out of bounds for naturists as these belong to the estate owner including the pine forest behind and is warden patrolled

Corton is ok, definitely one of the easier beaches to use with easy access and parking.

I would advise moving to where the large landslide comes off the cliff and settle around that. It’s where most couples go I’d say.

If you want that bit of privacy, take a windbreak, save the fishermen getting an eyeful lol.

It’s a nice beach

Yes, I've been a few times with friends. A bit of a hike, but a beautiful beach. But 2 points, the dunes are out of bounds, and it can get a bit breezy sometimes. I think parking is around £12 -£14 per day on Queen Ann's Drive. Take everything you need for the day, because there are ZERO facilities.

^ Spot on.

Sorry, Spot off.

The beach has been used by naturists for generations and any "status" that it had as naturist location was one of use and practice. This usage was well be known within our naturist community as well as the local population even if the practice of naturism was legally nebulous. The latter was clarified from April 2004 when the 2003 Sexual Offences Act came into force clarifying simple public nudity for the practice of naturis to be lawful. Lawful that is

on the beach up to the high tide mark as elsewhere in England and Wales.

"Reinstatement" therefore was not an issue as usage by naturists was never open to question.

Talk of a 'ban' etc, bandied around, no matter by what organisation or individual is misplaced Aas is the term "reinstatement".

Turn left and walk along a path past a house and a hide. The walk from the car park is about 1.25 miles. N.B zero facilities on the sandy beach and watch out for the broken razor clam shells once you have come out the pine forest and dunes.

Pretty easy to find, Louisa. Just head left through the pine forest from the end of the car park. Go past a lake, a house and a hide and turn right to the dunes. I'd be happy to be your guide if it's your first time this summer. No facilities e.g toilets, water or shelter from windy but a beautiful sandy beach. Watch out for the sharp razor clam shells. Nearby there is Wells for crab while the parking at Holkham is £10 for the day. There is now a visitor centre there.

"I’d love to go and strip off! Need to figure out how to get there from Cromer without a car! Hopefully I’ll be there this coming week! "

Don't expect to pick up or be picked up.

We will be visiting in the next few weekends, weather depending.

We’ll be taking windbreak and beach tent for “some” privacy

Nafferton, nr Driffield.

Just to clarify legal and practical side of Holkham.

It is a public space, so as such all normal laws apply and the 2003 Sexual Offences Act clarifies that public nudity for the purpose of practicing naturism should not be deemed unlawful - and I would add if done sensibly .

That applies to Holkham as in theory any other beach.

The term 'Official' is used by many as a practical description and if challenged historical precedent can be quoted.

When negotiating with the Police for my local beach they frequently used the phrase "a place of traditional local recreation" (Get a copy of Phil Vallacks 'Free Sun's, lots of precedent there).

Holkham used to be complicated by Royal visitors to Lord Lester, so a temporary banning order could be made. Anyway lord Lester doesn't like us on his land anyway.

After all that I would say, what a lovely beAch it is. Use it with confidence.

A small correction if you don't mind. The owner is the Earl of Leicester.
