Someone has told me you can hire a hotel for the day or a few hours, is that mmmm correct? Anyone used them?

Yes, I've used them. Often you don't even have to pay up front, which is handy. The funniest part is checking in when everyone knows you're there for sex, but everyone is pretending you're having a business meeting.
