I'll be there myself for 5 weeks 13th Jan to 17 Feb.

Flying in to Saigon, trying find somewhere to chill for a bit before working my way north, pop into Laos and end up in Hanoi.

Very nice, sounds quite like what I am wanting to do. I'm going to do it independent of any organised tours.

Cheers, how long does it take to get the visa on arrival at Saigon airport? Is it worth getting it before you go?

You have to visit Ha Long Bay. Stayed at the Swissotel when in Hoi An.

Hanoi was brilliant and know a very good local guide. Still in touch on FB if you need help with where to go regionally.

The hoi an chic hotel is stunning. I've stayed there. I think the chu chi tunnels are worth a visit and the meekong delta too. I'm off the thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Nam in june. I can't wait. But only having a few days in HCMC because I've been before.

Ah ha. Remembered I stayed in the Sofitel Legend Metropole while in Hanoi.

Super luxurious colonial style hotel. Great bar and rooms.

Jet lag meant I didn't realise a fellow guest had the hots for the clean shaven me until she knocked on my door after I'd left the bar.

A stunningly hot Australian high flyer I still see in the papers now. Manners prevent me from saying anything further.

Suffice to say, breakfast with her nanny and child in the morning was awkward

For the guy asking about visas.. Uk visitors get 15 days free without visa I believe, but other than that visa on arrival for vietnam can be iffy.. there's some online services that give a visa on arrival letter which you then exchange for a visa in the airport, but there is no official system for visas on arrival and so some are run by scam operators etc... If you're staying more than 15 days id recommend sending your passport to the embassy in London before you come so you know it's all done and dusted..

Also since everyone's recommending hotels, if you go to dalat then check out the saphir dalat hotel, pretty awesome quaint rooms and the lobby is full of antique cars and bikes etc which is pretty awesome..

You have to pay for a Vietnam visa. NO SUCH THING AS A FREE VISA. Check out the Vietnam Embassy also there are a couple of agencies that will help you. Just read up an TripAdvisor is helpful

Check the weather in north Vietnam is a lot colder in the north at this time of year.

I was there around this time but only had shorts and t shirts was defiantly not shorts and t shirt weather.

Just in case you was not aware

Not too jealous wish I was going back

Enjoy

The free 15 days isn't technically a visa and has only recently been introduced for certain EUROPE countries.. i recently had friends visit me here and they didn't have to pay providing it was under the 15 days.. there's a lot changing at the minute with visas and they're also halving all the costs of visas.. im involved in a moto tour company and as far as I understand it, this info should be accurate.. but definitely double check hahah

Phu Quoc, Saigon, Dalat, Nha Trang done. Looking at the weather, think I'll avoid the north.

Anyone recommend a quiet, not over developed area on the coast?

Hoi An would fit the bill. Stunning little French colonial town. Plus the tailors are excellent. X
