Can anyone tell me whats the best thing to do with regards to Cubas closed currency policy .

Ie is it best to take travelers cheques or what ?

yes.... and a very small amount of US dollars wouldn't go amiss as well

Pesquero area popular with Brits due to TC going there.

Tip staff one Peso regular and often and the service will flow.

Tip slightly more in the restaurants.

Try a trip to Santiago de Cuba

They actually prefer euro or sterling for tips etc as they have difficulty changing dollars, exchange rate is fixed but tbh there isn't much yet buy,people are very friendly for the most part but it is a poor country and some are on the hustle,we spent a few days in Havana and the rest in veradero beach area,a day in Havana is more than enough really as there isn't much there, hope that helps.

we went to cuba...never again..rob u all the time the sea is seriously warm,and the heat shocking,we also had a rain storm wow amazing,always ask the price first,and be prepared to walk away.still you have to go for the experience.

Don't take dollars. Take sterling and convert it to pesos at a bureau. Why get done twice on the conversion.

Pounds to one peso or 5 peso notes for tipping.

You can only get the peso there and you will need 25 of them to leave as an exit taz

I have just come back from 18 days in Cuba. If you have not received any good information yet then send me a message and I will try and help you out. I went all over the island Havana, Santiago, Bayamo, Trinidad, Cayo Largo and back to Havana.

They don't take US dollars even USA backed credit cards are refused. Ie Captital One, Americian Express.

Good old UK £ is the most welcome foreign currency however the banks don't accept UK coins so you will be harassed by locals trying to turn sterling coins into notes.

TBH I used £ in the very few places you can find to spend out there

Go, you can exchange money in lots of places, all the banks will exchamge it, been there twice now, and YES. they will try rip you off, BUT, all poor countries tryb to rip of tourists, we consider resorts the biggest rip off of them all.

Trinidad in the middle of the country is nice, lots to see, Santa Clara has nothing but Che's tomb, PM for more info if you need it

Thanks guys for all the info .

Read up a lot on tripadvisor ..and also gov.uk seems its either English sterling or Euros so i think my best bet will be sterling .

Apparently they are not accepting either American dollars ,American credit cards or even American express travelers cheques .

And there is virtually no ATM's

So it will defo be Sterling .

So thanks again for all your input its much appreciated xx

Hi been twice had a fantastic time. Take pound coins for tips at the start of the night and your drinks will never run dry.There are people who will rip you off wherever you go in the world.just be sensible! !

They won't exchange them. You need to order stirling from your bank in scotland

There will be a change place in your hotel. Don't change all your money at once. Maybe 50 a time. Then go to reception and get one peso notes or coins for tips. Sorted

Been twice and loved it ...bring euro with you ...you cant spend money eveeything is so cheap...people are great...weathers fabulous...beaches are awesome...oh and look out on sites for a swing party in Havana

While we've not been to Cuba we find that US dollars are much better than Sterling or Euro's when visiting some of the worlds poorer countries.

To most people (street traders Etc.) the different values mean nothing, one is one. Also the Greenback is the only one to still have a single denomination note which can be quite handy when tipping or spending smaller amounts as many are reluctant to take coins.

I cannot see the reason to pay one exchange rate in the UK and then have to change it again when you get there.

Things are changing in Cuba but it will take time.

The CUC Peso is the currency.

Take new English bank notes and change them there.

Why get penialised on changing say into Dollers then into Pesos ?

It is still unclear in some parts on the dollar. This time last year there was an extra 12 % commission on changing US Dollars.

I forgot about those but I remember a Scottish guy trying to pass one in Vietnam a few years ago and you would have thought he was trying to spend money from Mars.

It can be difficult. The answer is to order a beer, take a swallow and only then offer Scots notes - the only ones you have

US Dollars are impossible to change there, Euro are your best bet, there are ATM's a plenty in Havana,Also, you can go to any of the banks and use your debit card to withdraw pesos( we did this) Dont bother with the local currency that they use ( the CUC the exchange rate is roughly 14/1 against the CUP)

All you will need is Cuban Pesos CUP. the CUC is for the locals and unless fluent in spanish, they wont take them of you, as they know the real value.

If you are staying in resort type areas; Playa del Este, Playa Varadero, Cayo Largo or other Cayos, then local money is useless there. If you are going to go off the beaten track then definitely get some local pesos! You will find many street vendors selling pizza (7") ranging from 10-15 peso, which is about 40p-60p.

Fantastic for little snacks at lunchtime!
