I went to Iceland the first week of January one year. We planned to go on a trip to see the lights but decided not to. Some Japanese tourists had to go out for 4 nights before they saw them at a cost of about £50 each per trip.

In the winter it is only possible to travel by 4 by 4 and car rental is extremely expensive. Perhaps look on trip advisor to find out best time as global warming is changing the atmosphere.
