Behind the bike shed!

If you attend social events, what brings you in? What do you like, what annoys you? What could be done better?

If you don’t attend, is there something that puts you off which could be changed? What might bring you along?

I especially ask those in the South West of England, but anyone is welcome to respond! If you don’t want others seeing your reply, you can message.. but I can’t promise when/if I’ll get back to you!

Good and eloquent communication beforehand.

Recent potos of the people we are going to meet, taken together.

Where everyone likes what they see, then a commitment to meet in very near future.

Dislikes on meeting...

Obvious lies about ages, people who focus on themselves in conversation...

Usually familiar faces are what encourages me to attend. Along with seeing a person I have an interest in attending.

I haven’t yet been to a social, I’m pretty nervous to go to be honest, iv very easy to get along with and I can hold a go conversation once I’m comfortable but it’s just going in and actually doing it scares me abit

Don't be scared. If the host is good they will introduce you to people.

Club Meets Only

I'd love to attend a social, particularly the MLS as I know a few who go & enjoy it, unfortunately the free time doesn't allow me such a chance at the time being.

The chance to meet others who I wouldn't normally get to be is a great incentive

Try and keep me away

I’d actually see it as a big plus if there was a good variation in age. I don’t want to meet just younger and similar age people, as I like people of all ages.

I’m fairly new so haven’t actually had the opportunity to go to one yet, but I’d be looking for a good mix of ages, enough people who I match their criteria and people that seem kind, as I’d be nervous.

We find socials in a place with entertainment on is best, it can be just a town centre pub.

A drink, chat and maybe a bit of a dance takes the pressure off.

I think its best to approach socials with the attitude that you will have a nice chat with some interesting people and nothing more.

I like nice clean places where you can talk, music not too loud, which is private and easy to get too. I personally would pay a small fee to offset the costs to the organiser. Attend a social at a club once and that was nice, talk or play was an interesting combination.

It's not that we blame them. We tend to treat socials as well...socials, somewhere to meet people, chat, get along, the sexual aspect is secondary and an unexpected bonus if a connection is made. Lots of other people don't see it that way, which is fair enough and don't want to waste time chatting to people they don't want to have sex with.

We went to one when we were pretty new to the scene ( pretty nervous and shy ) , walked in and we thought we had got the wrong place as the hosts never even greeted us, no one on the door or anything ....we were there a good half hour when a guy came over and asked us our names and said you never paid when you came in

. Said they were in the corner and we had to go over and pay etc ...that was it no hello can we introduce you to these nothing , we felt we were there just to make up numbers for a party for their friends . So we finished our drinks, left and went to a club instead . So deffinatly make people feel included xx

I'm not sure on that one. I think a mix of ages is good, the problem is that we're frequently the only over 60s there and quite understandably a lot of people prefer to mix with younger. No idea what the answer is though.

That's my fear, and what puts me off attending some of the bigger organised socials. I don't want to feel like I've gatecrashed a private party unless I actually have gatecrashed a private party!

I'm going to the Chester one at the end of the month and I'm hoping it will be friendly and informal, and a place I can meet people who maybe don't get involved in the forums so I wouldn't normally get to know that way.

I've no expectation other than a good night and a laugh with people I don't currently know.
