sorry for your loss

or sorry for the loss of your dad

either should suffice

don't think there are any hard and fast rules though

you make it as personal as you see fit

Yep sounds okay. What's important is the message. Sorry for your loss.

personally i wouldnt put anyones name on the card, id just write a little message and then sign it, you cant get it wrong then

Thats a tricky one as the etiquette sites say to name the bereaved.

I think i'll just put both names on it

The card is to show support to the bereaved so I would have thought both the GF and your mates name should be on the card.

A novel bitchy post.

Now me I am one cynical witch, but I think the man was asking a question for help, not attention.

BUT, if he is asking it for attention , it isn't against rules.

OP Im sure they wont mind about etiquette and will just appreciate you taking the time to send a card and let them know youre thinking about them

In this situation etiquette stipulates you address the sympathy card "To the family of (deceased's name)

Ah, now that is a good answer and probably the best option as it covers all options.

"I thought that as they have been together 18 years"

then i would say he has been a part of your mates life too in all that time so you would wish to extend your sympathy to him too so yes pop his name on as well as his g/f but put hers first as its her dad
