Does anyone know of its origins and what does it mean? I know what it means but why the phrase?

Something to do with a 1700’s method of reviving the dead using smoke tobacco enemas. Namely on drowned people; blowing smoke up the arse of a drowned person the nicotine caused the heart to beat faster encouraging respiration and the smoke would also dry out the body removing moisture.
