Bit of a long one, but wondering if anyoen could help me, i work on Bank at my local hospital, i have a 3 year old and rely on Nursery for childcare, so i normally work 2 shifts a week. Last week i was poorly during the week, so i picked up a Saturday shift as its almost time a half pay so my money wouldnt have been down much.

A nurse in charge has to finalise my shift online so i can send it to payroll. The cut off for them is Sunday at midnight an then HR send them to payroll on Monday.

My shift on Saturday wasnt finalised. Nobody answered the phone on the ward saturday evening when i rang, and i was told there wasnt a member of staff who could get access to shifts on shift on Sunday. I rang the Unit Matron an he said he couldnt get access. The company who run the Bank staff arnt authorised to finalise shifts and they cant nag the ward u til its been 72 hours.

I rang work an explained what was happening and she said all i can do is fill in a complaints form. Which i did last night.

This morning my shift got finalised so i rang Payroll and asked if they could put it on this weeks pay. Payroll cant see the shifts until Tuesday so to was told to ring back in the morning.

If they cant get it put on this weeks wage,i will have to wait 2 weeks to get any wage.

Im a single mum, i dont get any finacial help from my sons dad, i dont have family who i can ask for money. So im going to really really struggle, especially with xmas next year!

Would going to the Union help? Are work allowed to not pay me for a shift because someone hasnt done their job propperly?

I hope this all makes sence, any advice is more than welcome!

I’m sure they can award an advance on the pay if it wasn’t your fault and you did everything correctly.

Contact payroll to ask how to go about that and who you need to speak to, obviously only if there is no way of getting your actual pay right this time.

Good luck I feel your pain, I was a single parent with no financial help from ex or social. It’s hard work. But you’ll get there x

The lady who deals with complaints mentioned an emergency pay thing but she said it would only be 65% and it gets really complex with my wages after. She didnt seem to think it was a very good idea :/ xx

I'd contact your union and they should know or be in a better place to help with advice on this. Hope you get things sorted quickly

Ask for a sub to counteract the shortfall and to the amount of the outstanding pay dispute then it will cancel out on the next wage packet so all should be sorted call the HR and explain the situation and how badly you need it for bills etc and I’m sure they will sort it as I know what it’s like to live on the breadline believe me I live hand to mouth every month and it’s not nice when this happens you end up not eating just so your children can and more it’s hard I feel for you

Well you would only normally take home 64% of your pay if you earn above the threshold anyway. And it’s just a loan. So when it goes through the payroll the gross pay is entered so tax NI and pension can be calculated, then the advance comes off. If you don’t earn enough to pay tax and Ni etc then you’ll get the difference when you’re paid, but at least you’ll get something rather than nothing x

If all other avenues have been explored then I would definitely speak to the union, after all it’s why I pay a subscription.

I really hope you get this sorted.

It's the timing that's going against you. Even talking with the union might not get it sorted in time. Your best bet really is dealing with payroll and seeing if they can work something out for you. It all depends on the person you get. They can do it if they really want to. As a last resort can you talk to your bank to see if they can provide an overdraft to cover the amount and then cancel it once the funds go in?

Hope you get sorted.
