Hi All

We looking to have a play with candles/wax - is there a particular type of candle we have to use to avoid burns?

Is it candles you have to buy in adult shops or any from supermarkets etc?

You can buy candles specifically for this. They have a lower burn temperature.

Depends on your preferences and pain thresholds I guess

Get proper BDSM ones, the wax has a lower melting point than regular candles. Also, as a general rule, darker waxes melt at higher temperatures. Start with the candle held well above the sub (a couple of feet up at least) - the wax cools as it falls, and over time you can bring it closer as you find where the limits are.

Do not use scented candles. Ever. Ever.

I've bought the BDSM ones and they are great as an introduction if there is any nervousness at all, but most of the time I use wide white pillar candles. Be sure to hold them far enough away so the wax cools slightly before it hits the skin. You can experiment with distance based on comfort level, but for the first drops be sure to hold way above.

I like to have a couple of candles burning at once so there's a good quantity of melted wax available to drip.

I also like to have ice to hand, partly because of the sensation but also if things start getting too uncomfortable it takes the heat out quickly.

Soy based candles, just search for BDSM or wax play candles. It can also be nice to warm up first with a massage candle.

Don't use normal Parafin or beeswax candles as they do give you proper burns.

The Facility

A good way to try wax for the first time if you are nervous is to apply cling film to the area first before dropping the wax. This way the temperature is slightly lower and it's easier to remove.

Don't forget to use a drop cloth underneath to catch any stray wax.

I must be doing it wrong then. After over 30 years of using normal candles I've never been burnt.I've had them all over Yes, you go red for a while but it wears off. I've even used sealing wax... Now that is a different matter altogether

I quite enjoy the candles that become massage oil and can be used everywhere... just don’t use loads as it can stain your sheets etc (something I learnt the hard way)

But those are lovely in combining both a bit of sting and pleasure all in one even on more sensitive parts

Update.

Thanks for all help and advice.

We bought the Norme candles.

Tried it out tonight with a bit of restraint and blindfold and deffo a thumbs up.

Never knew seeing a pair of breasts covered in wax be done erotic!!

To be safe test it on your own arm, underside of forearm is a good spot. Work inward until it becomes slightly uncomfortable then don't extend beyond that on your partner until she/he says it's ok...
