Just shaved completely for the first time down there, picks to follow, but what is the best after care advice when I've tried small bits in the past the regrowth has been excruciating

It's worth using an ingrow hair solution after you shave/wax/defuzz to avoid getting ingrown hairs as they grow back. These can cause pimples and spots (exfoliation mentioned earlier is also great for helping prevent this)

Good luck OP

Yes but let it rest there for a few minutes before rubbing it in. Arm pits are usually warmer and it will be to runny straight away

I used to suffer from awful shaving rash and hate the itchy regrowth when i went smooth. Now i mix my own exfoliating scrub and use prior also after shaving. It seems much better and the oils moisturise too. Occasionally I use a thin layer of sudocrem

Exfoliation and moisturising as people have said, tea tree oil is brilliant for soothing skin rashes. Try shaving with hair conditioner instead of soap or shaving foam, it's less harsh.
