"To be fair it's just the way the younger generation communicate nowadays. The abbreviations allow you to get as much info into a 160 character sms message. We don't exactly embrace "text speak" but am pretty sure it's here to stay." as a part of the "younger generation" can i just say its not how i communicate... and alot of the messages we get are from 40+ men when they are in text speak... perhaps they think its how we speak and are trying to comunicate on "our level"

"I've noticed on here that people in the age range of 40-49 are the most illiterate generation, every time I see a message on the forums or receive a message that looks like a child wrote it, I think to myself "I bet they're in their mid 40's" and I'm always right ... what happened? I'm not perfect, i miss out punctuation (or add too much alot of the time) and i sometimes say u and i say LOL alot but that's just taking it to another level... can you not see how that looks? if you don't have time to type out a proper sentence then how the hell do you have time to meet people?

We get messages from lots of people in their 20s which are not in 'text speak' and we know several people of that age who not only don't use it but disapprove of people who do. Conversely, we get messages from older people who do use it. We simply delete messages in text speak .

We have lots of younger people around us from the ages of 14 to 30 and only one insists on text speak! Most of the others are always telling her that she should grow up and "txt spk" is for kids! (she is the 14 year old!) I think the myth has grown up because of trendy people on television shows and news items have tried to be in with the crowd and state that kids use it "man"! In reality, in my life, we don't see the wholesale use of text speak anywhere.. Maybe I am just lucky, but the kids mentioned have much better comprehension and grammar that a lot of 30+ posters on here! The difference is they see written English as important, whereas some on here think that it is not! Oh and I know I am not perfect, but at least I try...

" I had to delete my post because I was unaware of your thread. I don't use text speak but I will defend people who do. Fact is (as it has been shown here) people from all walks of life use it. I've seen "educated" people here in the forums make horrific mistakes in spelling and grammar. Occasionally, others will highlight this. Not me because nine times out of ten they've written something that's made me think or made me smile. It's about expression and that's part of what makes the site fun.

I know very intelligent people who can't spell for toffee, they are somewhat dyslexic I suspect, but I would rather see someone trying to write correctly than the laziness of text speak, which I genuinely cannot fathom.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Text-speak is destroying the English language. Besides, there are words in our language that are not even English! Only a small group of people in this country "speak properly" and dialects and slang combined with different cultures that have emigrated here over the years have contributed just as much to the way we speak and write. Not to mention technology itself has forced us to adapt the way we communicate. For example, Twitter allows you to use only 140 characters. That's 20 characters less than a text from most dated mobiles. I don't use Text-speak but for those who do, it's fun. I don't feel it shows a lack of intelligence or laziness. Such claims are based on assumptions, which make an ASS of U and ME.

" Well, I think you are also making assumptions! You are assuming that people find it "fun" when in fact they know no better! It is just language to them and not some funky way of communicating! On a phone, perhaps it is not laziness, but certainly in email messages and letters it show a gross lack of respect for those recieving the messages. As for intelligence? Well, if you feel you have to use "txt spk"in your normal, everyday life, it seems to indicate that you have no respect for either the English language or the message recipent.. Definate lack of intelligence

Definate lack of intelligence" It's not a lack of intelligence. Such a statement is inconclusive because you can't be 100% sure, the same way I don't know 100% a person's reasons for using it. The only lack of respect I see is insulting someone for the way they choose to be communicate. Unless it's intended to cause offence, there's no harm caused.

"I don't mind the odd word here and there, but when the whole thing is unreadable its not exactly making me horny trying to decipher what is being said.. and makes people come across as alot less intelligent than they often are."
