Is it just me who gets put off by bad grammar?

Every other message is poorly written and I cant bring myself to reply.

Am I being too stuck up?

Yes and no!

I sometimes have to ask people what they actually mean when I can't work it out. Auto correct often causes problems, but using text speak does not help.

Worse are the messages with no punctuation at all.

Spelling mistakes and poor grammar I can live with as not everyone has had a great education or may have had problems like dyslexia with which to contend.

If it's a constant thing, yes. Once or twice, no. Auto carrot gets everyone at some point.

Its why I prefer to use my laptop over my phone. Plus im much quicker and accurate on the laptop. I cannot understand some messages at all.

Is is that difficult to message someone using good punctuation and grammar?

I honestly don't care about education, I wasted mine away and eventually turned my life around later. It's just the messages that say "hy hun u r to fine I'd luv to av a go on tht pussey" that put me right off...

See, that was a genuine typo/error, which I can ignore, it's the blatant lack of grammar that I am talking about.

Currently, I don't. The point of this thread was to gauge whether I am being too picky/presumptuous based on grammar alone. I wondered whether I am missing out on some good opportunities because of it. That's all.

There's only one way to find that out. All I can say is that I know people who are not great at written English and people who are and neither group better than the other when it comes to meeting on here.

Bad grammar can be excruciating.

Bad spelling too. But, in all fairness we can forgive both if the message is genuine and honest.

Some people are dyslexic and find it impossible to be correct. I was castigated for highlighting poor spelling in a a post.

I now cut a lot of slack on this subject.

Thank you! I think I've learnt a valuable lesson here, which is that not everyone can type well, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth the time of a chat/meet.

It depends.

Will reply to all messages, but are unlikely to meet someone who is unable to communicate on our level.

By that, I mean proper sentences not just one word or text speak responses.

If it's hard work I'll just get fed up.

As I have an extremely dyslexic daughter and have lived abroad where my language skills start off fairly dodgy, I have been through the grammar/spelling/punctuation mill then I can say I will never judge another on this! Are you going to ask them to do a written exam before sex?

Whereas text/lazy messaging is just that lazy plus I don't actually understand it as opposed to the other, which being an educated person can mostly work out! Happy to move onto phone chat for those dyslexics or those that maybe, English isn't their first language.

And for those who think that bad spelling, grammar, punctuation or dyslexia doesn't make a person intelligent or not on their level intellectually then may you say that about Einstein & Picasso (no longer with us) or to Richard Branson, Orlando Bloom and many many more otherwise "uneducated" people!

Yes it is hard to see past. I can forgive the odd typo, we all do it sometimes. But I've seen some stories in the fantasy section, where it could be really good, but it's almost unreadable and off putting due to lack of punctuation and poor spelling.

Depends, the odd word spelt wrong or missed is fine auto-carrot is a pain sometime. But text speak or messages where it takes me ten minutes just to work out one sentence get quickly deleted.

My phone screen is cracked so the occasional words may be spelt wrong, that with auto correct is the worst. If it’s every word though and unreadable we just delete and move on.

No, we are the same. Its not hard to type and full word. Detest text speak and we cannot be bothered to try and work out what is being said. We hard to message back the other day asking if the person was ok it was that bad.
