The pain of a broken back is awful. I hope the surgery helps. I know from when a very close family member broke their back that it's a horrible experience. How have they immobilised you while you're waiting?

Also if you're in too much pain tell a nurse they might be able to increase your pain relief

Good luck. The back brace will mean you can be mobile at least and you will be able to remove it to wash after a time. Get someone to bring you a comfortable tee shirt to wear under it. Let us know how you get on.

After having 12 hour surgery last year the road will be long. Look at recovery weekly not daily. Stay positive, this isn’t easy but look to your friends and family for support and help. I was in hospital for 7 weeks.

When I was going through it I deleted all social media and apps. My reasoning was those who really care about me had my number. It’s really hard to say this but leave your phone alone, especially when in icu and under the influence of pain meds. I rang and texted total gobbledegook to my contacts.

I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. You’re already doing well 2 hours post surgery to be doing what you are

Peterborough and Bedford

Hope you will get better soon, OP. I broke my knee, badly, last September, needed two surgeries, one to put ex-fix (external frame holding the break in place so the swelling can be reduced), another one to put two metal plates in my lower leg. I was in hospital for 27 days, had yet again learn how to walk again, first with Zimmer frame, then 2 crutches, then 1 crutch, and nothing now for the last couple of months. I'm still struggling, have better days and worse days, and I'm a walking human barometer nowadays (my leg aches when the weather's due to change).

My advice: as soon as you can, work with physio, and work hard. Do what they tell you to do, and try to do as much around yourself, in your bed, as you can, as you are going to need upper body strength.

And good luck.

Make sure you don't do too much too soon, equally don't just lie there waiting for the pain to go. Little and often is best, one position means you'll heal stiff (haha) and when you do want to / need to move it'll be harder!

Your spelling is the least of your worries and your posts are perfectly understandable.

You'll get used to the brace and will be able to take it off to wash etc I think. The person I know who broke her back could. Do you know if they'll move you to a rehab centre eventually?

I have had plenty of back surgery and it is outrageously painful. You need to focus on your recovery and not worry too much about the outside world. Do exactly what the physios tell you.

There is light and the end of the tunnel, keep your spirits up and think how much worse it could have been.

You said earlier that you’d had your op was going to intensive care because things didn’t go right during your op.

Yes you would have stopped breathing during surgery as you would have been paralysed, tubed and ventilated and then turned onto your front for the op.

Hope your better soon.

OP. I can sympathise as I had an accident 2 years ago in December when I slipped on an icy pavement and fell hard on my back.

A&E diagnosed severely strained lower back muscles, plus Physio to assist recovery.

Three months on, though still able to hobble, physio hadn't worked & I was still in severe pain. An MRI was done then I was seen by a specialist who told me, I'd fractured a spinal vertebrae.

Crucially, the vertebrae fractured, then reshaped itself and encapsulated the fracture all within a few seconds with the vertebrae above and below holding fast & securing the spinal integrity.

The pain was from trapped nerves, but was told they would heal. I'd also unwittingly done all the right things in the right way but it took a year to heal fully and to become pain free.

But there were days when not all the pain killers and Heat Patches combined could not work effectively enough.

Good luck.

I dont think you can get sick pay as you are self employed but you should be entitled to new style employment support allowance if you apply for universal credit, can be done online and jobcentre can visit you to verify. Can contact citizen advice online too who would be able to give you a better idea of what your entitlement is.

Good luck, feel better

How did someone get up during the night and fall on you?

If your injury was that bad, with post op complications and your bed bound You’d be on a High Dependancy Unit or step up unit, how would that have happened?

There isn't a secret handshake, especially of the kind described, he's kidding .

Sleeping on a hospital ward is nearly impossible sometimes, I used to hope the morphine knocked me out.

I hope things improve for you

Believe me, things happen in hospital, which I learned first hand when I broke my knee, badly. The places in intensive care unit are very limited, and as soon as your stats are ok, you're back to normal ward, with sometimes even 10-12 other patients, depending on hospital. And if my experience is anything to go by (though I hate to think it's standard practice), hospitals don't seem to care about how old you are, they put you where there is a bed available. So I was on, what I was calling, 'geriatric bay', with everyone at least 25 years my senior. Most of them with dementia, getting easily confused, screaming, trying to get out of bed etc. And hardly any staff around. During just one night, a lady in the bed near me tried to get up on a few occasions, and she did fall, just on the floor. I think the next night, there was a nurse sitting in our bay most of the night (yes, I had trouble sleeping in hospital, too). So yes, things happen on the wards, unfortunately.

To the OP: I'm glad you're now getting support from your friends, and that you can start physio. It is going to be a long road, with loads of bumps and frustration, but remember that there is always a light in the tunnel. You might not always see it straight away, as it might be hiding behind the corner, but it is there. Stay positive and good luck in your recovery.

I work in hospitals and have done since 1986 including the QA at Cosham, he would not be on a normal ward.

Post op complications, infection, bedridden with bed baths, large quantities of morphine, he would not be on the sort of ward where other patients can get to during the night and ‘fall’ on him.

So sorry to hear what happened and what you have been going through. Keep following the nurses and physio's advise.

If you have a wandering confused patient near you, maybe ask if you could be moved to a different bed.

Sending you healthy healing thoughts.

If your self employed and effectively have had to end your job then you should be able to claim benefits. You can make a new claim for universal credit online via a mobile phone claim the sick component the hospital can provide letters as to why you cant yet attend appointments etc. It will also include a claim for housing benefit towards your rent. Can your friend call citizens advice bureau whilst he is with you (in case they need to do data protection checks / questions with you). Given the circumstances they should be able to put you onto a welfare adviser who can help will sorting out the different steps you will need to take to get things sorted out. If you get stuck message me.

I hope you get well soon buddy.

This is precisely why it should be drink OR drive.

If the OP is lying in bed with nothing to do, I don't blame him posting on here. How lovely that people are cheering him up, offering to visit him. 6 days of supportive messages and then you come along not believing it.

Why comment....just read it and move on ....no need to be so unpleasant.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have tons of family and friends available to visit them in hospital. When I broke my knee and ended up in hospital for 27 days, unable to leave my bed for most of those days, Fab was my lifeline, as well as a friend off here who really came through for me, even though he didn't need to. If it wasn't for my online friends from Fab, and for my blog, I would not have survived my hospital stay with my mental health mostly intact. So can we stop judging and, if we don't want to offer support, just stop from commenting, please?

Not everyone is lucky enough to have tons of family and friends available to visit them in hospital. When I broke my knee and ended up in hospital for 27 days, unable to leave my bed for most of those days, Fab was my lifeline, as well as a friend off here who really came through for me, even though he didn't need to. If it wasn't for my online friends from Fab, and for my blog, I would not have survived my hospital stay with my mental health mostly intact. So can we stop judging and, if we don't want to offer support, just stop from commenting, please?

Thank you and thank you all for your suport i find it hard anuth to have my frend and his family here to support me iv never had anything in my life so fr them to do that and i dont want anyone els to visit me i find it hard to meat people with out having a drink with them first it helps the nervs and thank you all for your suport if you want to know more please gust messed me but no hatters "

Soz but ur full of shit ur story ain’t ringing true n I’m a nurse for nhs!

If the OP is lying in bed with nothing to do, I don't blame him posting on here. How lovely that people are cheering him up, offering to visit him. 6 days of supportive messages and then you come along not believing it.

Why comment....just read it and move on ....no need to be so unpleasant.

If I lived closer I would have popped in to see him. Let's hope you never need any advise or support from the friendly folk of fab !

It’s just our view. We are entitled to that.

Has anyone here actually visited the Op?

If they have then we were wrong and would apologise. Until then, we remain Cynical x I’ve offered to visit and my message was not responded to on here. "

correct it was

The only reason I’m cynical is you were texting on here half hour after major surgery and whilst icu were dealing with you.

Last year I spent 3 weeks in icu and especially straight after surgery was no where near able to text

Really hope you’re genuine

I must admit this aspect of the timescale is what surprised me. Plus the fact that mid thread he mentioned that his heart stopped when he'd been hit. I can't imagine anyone being able to text post cardiac arrest and following ROSC while awaiting surgery.

I hate being so cynical though. OP I hope you recover quickly from whatever injures you got

North Coast

As a senior anaesthetic practitioner with 33 years experience, this tale is testicles.

Several have asked which hospital, no answer.

The posts of ICU and stumbling patients, infection after first op, then return to theatre almost immediately (open an infected wound for further spinal surgery?) and another infection.

Nurse telling you that you stopped breathing during the operation! You’d have stopped breathing during the induction process and only reversed once turned back over again, any nurse would have known that.

I’d sent a message early on in this offering for one of my anaesthetic colleagues to pop down and see him. No reply.

Sorry OP you’ve been busted and sorry to all fabbers that have been duped, I know that you genuinely want to believe it.
