Off on a city break to Budapest this weekend - I will be most appreciative if any Fabbers have any suggestions or tips and tricks that you can share to help make the most of my trip

Make sure you get your tram ticket stamped before you get on...the inspectors were very keen to issue fines. We had tickets but they hadn't bern stamped...slapped wrists, stern words and a fine.

Tut tut.

No tips I'm afraid but its a great city. The coffee shops are really ornate with a few having string quartets playing. Has a kind of Vienna vibe. Enjoy

Most people recommend the hot baths.

Have a great time .

The champagne brunches were good at the big hotels, but that's going back around 10 years

It’s a beautiful City. Strongly recommend a Danube boat trip, the Buda side is full of things to see. Go out at night the place is fantastic for nighttime photographs - buildings are beautifully lit.

Thanks for all suggestions so far!

Yes - I always struggle to understand public transport rules when abroad ie stamping tickets etc. Can’t be wasting my beer money on tram fines!

The public baths are great! Also check out the Ruin Bars. There are free walking tours that are a great way to see the center but you are expected to tip around a tenner.

As an ex-communist country, expect a lot of beauracratic legacy in the form of anyone in a position of authority with a big hat. They'll threaten you with prison for the smallest things but have no real power. Never hand over your passport to them (they'll ask for it if they want to give you a fine). The police won't bother with supporting them unless you're being aggressive.

The central areas are beautiful but the outer bits are really run down and covered in graffiti. Everyone gathers in the parks in the evening to get wasted but it didn't feel intimidating when we were there.

St Gellert baths. Heaven!

Unfortunately you can't go naked in most of it, but there are separate men and women areas where you can.
