Sacrifices of goats and a dog by the Luperci; offering of cakes by the Vestals; fertility rite in which the goatskin-clad Luperci strike women who wish to conceive?

Or have I googled the wrong thing?

Actually, with the giving of cakes, it could work well for a forum social.

peak district

Think that Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' has a reference to Mark Antony running naked through Rome as part of the Lupercalia celebrations. Sex was also involved so later the church banned all mention of the festival, too much fun for Xtains!

Valentines Day is the modern equivalent of Lupercalia... The Christian Church moved feast days to coincide with pagan festivals - Lupercalia was a fertility festival times so that abies would be born in time for the harvest.

Legend has it that unattached folk would pin a heart cut from fabric to denote their single status... This is supposedly where the expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve" originates. (plenty of other theories though!)
