'Nillas, civilians and tourists

So we're in a bar in the Pink Triangle last night, and I'm slyly touching up Jem (if you can do anything slyly when her skirt is round her waist) as a bar full of swingers and a few random punters enjoy themselves.

Pointing out the RPs to Jem I referred to them as civilians. It's what we used to call straights who wandered into the gay bar I cut my teeth at as a doorman.

Oh, she said, the tourists, so called because they only come to the Pink to gawp? Or were they just 'nillas likely to be shocked rather than amused by public play?

So what do we call them? Civilians, tourists or 'nillas? Or maybe different names for different behaviour?

Not sure it's about a title - just shorthand or slnag. Something Jem said last night inspired it, and then I realised there's a thread on the same topic. So I thought I'd start this thread as a debate.

wha mean is, when in that situation, and you see one of the above, do you really need to say 'oh look, a couple of 'nillas' or whatever.

would it not be just as well to say 'oh, they dont look happy to have wandered in here' or whatever??

'slang' isnt always easier r shorter, just attention grabbing (cockney rhyming slang jumps to mind. apples and pears when its much easier to say stairs. lol) but its like credit crunch when recession is much quicker to say

Hmmm...

Cockney rhyming slang, like Polari and back slang, isn't meant to be quicker to say - it's deliberately obscure, an offshoot of thieves' cant.

Maybe that's what I'm getting at, that the slang is part of a communal bonding. Or maybe I wasn't thinking too straight after a 19 hour day yesterday....

Would the OP be offended if you went into a straight pub/club (if there is such a thing) and they all started labeling/calling you?

Just because we all have different persuasions doesn't mean we have to tag them.

Fair point. Actually, I get labelled all the time.

The barmaid who served my pint last night in London called me a Geordie, because I thanked her for keeping an eye on my bag; I ended the sentence with Bonnie lass, and she said 'I love you Geordies...' (Shame she couldn't pull a pint to save her life and put it in a jug.')

Things have labels so we know what they are. So do people sometimes. Not all labels are pejorative.

Just a couple of debates that came up last night while out with a whole gang of people, and I must admit I was amused to hear myself calling people civilians again....

I think I'm not sure vanilla helps as a label you see...

slang isnt always meant to make things eaier or shorter, its often created by a roup of like minded people to talk about things without 'outsiders' knowing what they are talking about

If the lifestyle people are involved in seems diferent to the norm, those that like to indulge often find it necessary to discuss things using terms or labels

i think that is what _wayman was wondering about...the fact we can use words to bond,

Some of the behavior last night was highly likely to offend non swinging straight ppl..(nillas would have been much easier to write lol)

Identifying them.. necessary so they are not offended, or not...they chose to go t o the pink and have no cause for complaint...

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

All I know is that in the sometimes strange world of train spotters, regular passengers are called "normals". The saying came about after station announcements used to describe charter trains as "not for normal passengers". They are now describes as "for ticket holders only"!

Exactly, and identifiers are useful, there is a reason the newcastle socials are held in the pink, because in some bars 2 women snogging would get u thrown out...

the tourists, as i call them , have by all accounts ruined canal street. We used to go down there top pick up men for 3 somes from time to time...according to manc friends we are as likely to be twatted for asking them now ,as the bars are full of ppl going to gawp...

Being able to identify those who may cause trouble is important.
