Content theft ruining Fab

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

We have been members of Fab for sometime, and ever since we joined content theft has been an issue, but it seems to be increasing.

In the last month we have been notified to a number of profiles that have been set up using our pics, people have told of finding them on porn sites and social media platforms as well.

What can Fab do to stop people from stealing others content and passing it off as their own.

Could Fab implement automatic watermarking to a great degree? At present the site URL and user name are added to the bottom left of a pic, could this watermark be applied more prominently across the middle of the pic, thus rendering it useless to steal and repost?

We already watermark our pics, probably not in a secure place to stop the theft, but we do feel that as the platform operator, Fab should be doing more to protect its users content.

We have also found that people screen grab our cam sessions and that these get posted to other sites, again, what can Fab do to protect those that use its cam facilities? Other camming sites use the DMCA protection, whilst this doesn’t stop people screen recording, it does bang a big old watermark over the video with the users name, so if theft does happen, at least the real content owners can be identified rather than some sad like faker hiding behind their keyboard.

Now I hear the forum police now, ‘if you don’t want it stolen, don’t share it’, yup we get that, but we also feel that Fab could be doing more to combat this very real issue.

We think that across the board Fab needs to look at itself, and identify the key issues that it’s users are having and make some real efforts to address those short comings, in our experience the main gripes are:

Content protection

A uniform approach to pic moderation

A uniform approach to trolls and abusive users

A uniform approach to forum moderation

These are serious issues, each with their own facets, twists and turns.

It’s now 8:15 and there are over 22,000 people logged in and that number will increase across the day, we the paying members of Fab, have a right to be better cared for by the site’s owners and moderators.

If you agree, please comment, maybe if we can get 179 comments in support, Fab will listen.

As for us, our gallery of over 300 images has been reduced to less than 40, we will no longer cam , no longer share new pics and will no longer accept any friend requests, effectively we will stop using Fab for the very things we joined up for, it’s a sad day for us.

I have ised another site before and they had a securitt protocol where you couldnt even screen shot the pics.

No idea how it worked but it did give you confidence in its security

I’m in the same boat as you , I have reduced my public pics down from nearly 200

I’ve had my pics used to catfish others and charge others to view on other sites and even today have been told an account on is using one of my pics as a profile pic !

I constantly put up status updates to say I’m not chatting on any other hook up / dating site and am only thankful that others report these fake profiles

It’s such a shame because it’s all supposed to be fun but a few have to spoil it

A very good write up and one we totally agree with.

Our pics are pretty much down bare minimum and we stopped our site supporter payments a couple of months ago as we feel the site doesn't do anywhere enough to sort out the many problems it has.

What can they do realistically now. Pretty much everyone uses mobile phones to access the site now that has screen shot technology which doesn't need permissions from any platform.

Someone can send me a pic that gets deleted after the message had been read but I can screen shot it, edit it and upload it.

Perhaps the watermark thing might be a good idea.

For the same reason Facebook is responsible for the spread of fake news and race hate.

Creating a platform doesn’t absolve you from the responsibility of the actions users take using it. You create the platform, you have a responsibility to protect your user base.

Pretty simple really.

Others notify us, or we find them ourselves. We have been very prolific on here so have a huge friend list and thankfully most of them actually give a shit enough to notify us when our content has been spotted elsewhere.

Forced watermarking across the centre of pics with the original submitters username emblazoned across it would deter thieves for sure.

And adding a forced watermark similar to DMCA would protect the cam content. Both of which can be implemented using pretty straight forward coding in the site’s back end.

So how do they combat mobile phones and screen shots?

Users have no responsibility for their own property?

I don't know the answers, just posing questions.

"I always say you get what you pay .....

So unless people are prepared to pay $30-$50 a month..... you’re asking for champagne with beer money....."

I disagree entirely, I’m asking for the site’s owners to actually do something about the ongoing privacy issues that their site fails to address.

The addition of code to the site back end thats changes how pics and videos are watermarked will take less that half a day to implement site wide and about 2 days to QA.

Even if they got a freelancer in to do the work, at most it’s a cost of £1500 to Fab to solve a very big issue on their platform and one that has been reported many many times in the past.

I would argue that this is the pricing strategy that Fab has come up with in order to attract enough users, knowing that a percentage will upgrade.

The management haven’t indicated that they intend to improve security, therefore it’s a fair assumption that our fivers aren’t going towards and changes.

If people leave because of it, the bottom line gets hit so it may persuade them to actually make investment.

A good topic to bring up. I’ve noticed a lot more “screen-shot” images being used on profiles. Which raises a red flag to me. Especially when they’re the only images. As all photos have to be approved by admin, surely a bar on screen shot images would be a start to content theft. And in a world that pretty much 99% of people have smart phones, poor quality images shouldn’t be approved either. It’s misleading and a waste of people’s time

I think Fab needs to take some responsibility here and upgrade security features across the site.

I’m not sure what the legal ramifications are, but with Facebook in the limelight over content creation and how it is used and abused by its members I woukd think Fab should take heed and address this very serious business.

Gone are the days of building a site, collecting the cash and taking no responsibility.

I’m expecting to get a forum ban shortly for questioning the very lopsided status quo

I guess pictures being stolen, used on other sites etc etc, is pretty common, if you are using this site for self promotion or club promotion it comes with the territory, it is going to happen, splashing face pics about, asking for Fabs, accepting friend requests from everyone doesn’t help, if you are happy to get the attention then the downside to that is more people will rip off your pictures.

I’ve been alerted a couple of times to people nicking my pics and using them to set up their own profile.

Grrrr.

At the same time, I wouldn’t want a watermark across them.

I don’t know what the answer is though, except to regularly tin-eye my pics to make sure they’re not being used somewhere they shouldn’t be.

As a very average looking single guy on here I guess this isn't really a problem I have to worry about! Personally I wish the site wouldn't watermark photos at all, and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the flip side of this practice. My face picture is kept private, but I do send it out with messages and I'd really rather that recognisable pictures associating me with the fab url didn't exist!

Yup, you’ve missed the pint I’m afraid.

We don’t want watermarks either, but similarly I don’t want to find my pics on well known porn sites having clearly been ripped off from here. And I don’t want to receive messages from profiles that have used our pics to set them up.

Something needs to be done, by FAB

"You can gets apps on your phone that allow you to watermark your own pics"

We do that already, but Fab should implement a standard across the site for content protection for its users.

It’s a current hot topic in the world, site owners and their responsibility to their users, Fab does tend to ignore most issues and deals with them very superficially when it does step in.

A standardised practice of the site watermarking and protecting its users content more is the right step to be making.

It shouldn’t matter how big your site is and it’s user base, 50,000 on Fab or 2 billion on Facebook, the premise is the same, you create the platform, you protect your users and their content.

Ypu are posting your photos on a public website and the cost to implement a system like your going on about would cost a fortune. Maybe keep your pics private and share them to people you choose and save some hassle

Because everyone has their own thing and ours was posting pics and enjoying the subsequent banter, which is now lost.

"As a very average looking single guy on here I guess this isn't really a problem I have to worry about!

Something needs to be done, by FAB"

Nope, I didn't miss the point at all. I understood very well your point of view, and I still do. I was just pointing out the flip side to watermarks.

"A good topic to bring up.

I was under the impression that screen shots aren't allowed."

You are right

This is what Admin say about pics

https://www.fabswingers.com/articles/FAQ

Why don't you right-click protect our photos to stop others stealing / saving them?

We believe in being straighforward with the members of Fab. Right click protect doesn't work and gives a false sense of security by pretending to "protect" images. Other sites may pretend they've protected your images but actually they're being dishonest by claiming that.

Right click "protect" can be gotten around in under 2 seconds by any of the following methods:

Simplest: Goto File menu, Save As, and save to desktop = The photos will be in a folder on your desktop that your browser has created.

OR... Disable JavaScript by going to Tools menu, choose Internet Options, Click the Security tab, click Custom Level, scroll to the "Scripting" section of the list and click Disable. Right click can now be used to save images.

OR... Press print screen and the image + page will be copied to clipboard where it can be pasted into a graphics program for resize or save.

We give you three privacy options on your photos and we now hide images from anyone who isn't a member of Fab. If you are worried about someone stealing your photos you may want to set them to be viewable only by your friends, or private in which case you can send by private mail.

We also now watermark all photos upon upload.

"You can gets apps on your phone that allow you to watermark your own pics

Maybe keep your pics private and share them to people you choose and save some hassle"

No it wouldn’t, I work in website development and can accurately estimate the work needed to implement forced watermarks, on pictures it is already in place, but we think the placement of the forced watermark could be better.

On videos it is a couple of days work and testing, a decent dev in London on a freelance day rate, could do the work in less than 3 days. On a £650 London based rate that’s under £2k, outsource it to Eastern Europe and you could get it done for under £500.

And that’s not a lot of money in either case.

So I don’t think cost as a reason to take no action is a good argument.

Any devs on here fancy doing Fab a favour and fixing their site?

You just said you work in website development. Then step up and offer your services. Or keep your pics private and choose who you share them with

We have taken all the steps outlined by Fab, butstillthe content is stolen, simply adding different ways to classify an image and flag it in a database is not the solution, and doesn’t do enough to address the issue, as is clearly evident.

I am not a developer but a producer, my skills lie in managing people budgets and timings to reach the end goal, I can not do the work myself and I would not want anyone I know professionally to have access to this side of my life.

The South

"We have been members of Fab for sometime, and ever since we joined content theft has been an issue, but it seems to be increasing.

"

You've raised some really valid concerns and questions.

We completely agree with a uniform approach to moderation issues too.

Most of the conversations we've had with people are around inconsistency in applying the rules.

By the same token we understand a lot of the backroom team are part time, unpaid.

It's a tough act to balance, it doed feel like there's an inequality in the balance unfortunately.

OK just a bit of information for you all. Normally you won't hear from Admin once making a report but in the case of stolen pics you will.

You will get a mail initially saying they are looking into it. Once the verify it you will then get a mail saying your problem is resolved.

Admin can't deal with anything unless you report it. In the case of pics used on other sites, if you report them on those sites I am sure they have a similar way of dealing with it for you.

If Admin are going to change pic security I am sure they will start a thread for us all but at the moment they have an answer on the FAQ's which I have pasted above.

If you do see any pic that is against rules please report and it will be dealt with. Please don't assume just because it is on the net somewhere that it is a fake account, we have pics all over the net on different sites so I am sure others do too.
