Ok call me naive but can you just book hotels for like a few hours or an evening if you cant do all night. Are they ok with that? Some hotels u pay upfront online but others want payment when u check out. I know there probably used to it but just wondered if any of you guys have done it? Thanks!

When you book and pay in advance, you usually just return the key to reception...so no embarasssing conversations. Some hotels will charge you extra if you check out early...so read the small print! That said maybe organise a "get together" that way you'll really enjoy the room!
