I’ve finally got round to dragging my bike out of the garage and gave her a good old greasing up.

Now it’s time to hop on and enjoy the scenery

O don't believe cycling gets you fit

Just builds up leg muscles and wears pug hips and knees

I think fast power type walking is best

Or even swimming

The type of cardio doesn't really matter, once you get past the initial getting into it you're not exhausting the muscles anymore (unless you keep going for longer and longer) so it makes no odds to your body what you're doing just that your heart rate is up. The main thing is you enjoy it so you stick at it but either way it'll improve your fitness and help towards a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight.

Worth throwing some weights in there though to remind your body you need the muscle so you calorie deficit should be replaced by burning more fat than muscle, you can't do this long term with cardio.

Spin classes Mon, Wed or Fri mornings if you're up for a warm up. I've not been for a while myself. Or a few miles on the bike over to Portwrinkle its about 20 I think.

As someone with totally knackered knees, and having had various surgeries on them, my surgeon & physio have always recommended cycling over walking or running as there is no impact on the joints.

Weight training carries on working after it’s finished, cardio doesn’t.

Need both.

To burn fat, low intensity cardio before breakfast is the way. Weights in the evening!

It doesn't matter how you burn calories they all count. I believe that the OP said he wanted to get fit rather than lose weight.

Cycling is a great way to improve your fitness. As long as you're working hard, then you'll improve.

Try this one OP (and anyone else), the bear crawl;

get down on all fours (hands under your shoulders, knees under your hips, so you crawl like an animal), move forwards for 10m, then reverse back. Do this 3 times with a minute's rest between sets

I have started again recently and feel great for it. One of my knees was starting to go, but after cycling, no pain, more movement and less stress. I will keep it up and its amazing how quick you can rack up the miles. Loads of routes to follow if you search around too, so you aren't having to come up with your own all of the time.
