Somewhere

I’m an Aussie so I’m not sure if our options here are much different to the uk.

I would love to know if anyone has experience with the copper iud as opposed to the hormonal iud (Mirena). I’m not keen to using hormonal methods due to bad past experience with the pill and such.

I have heard the negative side effect can be heavier and more painful periods.

Any sharing would be much appreciated.

I've had it two years now, some bleeding on and off at first, and one looooong (2 weeks) light (for me, anyway) period about a year later.

I've used the pill in the past and have had none of the same issues with the coil.

I am REALLY enjoying not having to deal with getting a period anymore.

I can't tolerate any hormone treatment at all so I'm going for a full on sterilization. Won't have to worry about contraception ever again. Just another option to consider.

Same here. I’m on my third one now & wish I’d done it years ago.

The difference with the Mirena & the pill / injection / implant is that the hormone is directly in your cervix & not in your bloodstream, so the dose is much less as it’s direct. It’s also not surging through your whole body to get where it needs to be.

I had massive problems with pill & injection and awful periods (heavy, painful erratic & extended). Now I’ve spotted just after each one is done for a day or two & other than that I get nothing at all - no periods, no cramps, no side effects!!

The copper coil doesn’t stop bleeding.

I know some people have issues with the coil, and it’s not for everyone - but as the hormone is direct, once it’s taken out, it’s out of your system immediately. So if you try & it’s not for you, getting it removed is a doddle!!

Don’t let the fact it’s hormone based put you off, because it’s totally different to any other hormone related contraception!

I had a copper one it gave me periods that lasted 2 weeks extremely painful and heavy from start to finish

Now have a mirena it's stopped them altogether

I have the mirena, it was offered to me after a few years on different pills for endometriosis. It's stopped my periods completely, except every few months I have a slight bleed. Nothing like what I had prior. Obviously not all cases will be the same, but I've had a really positive outcome from it!

I had the coil after the birth of my son within 2 hrs it was out, the doctor congratulated me on the birth of the coil and said I have a very sensitive cervix therefore a no go as my body would just get rid of it again if redone so I sent hubby for the snip much easier x

I was sterilized last year because I'd tried every contraceptive going and was adamant I wasn't having the coil. You get to a point where you just don't want to fill your body with crap.

Best thing I ever did.

I was one of the first women in my area to have the Essure procedure, took 10 minutes, and just paracetamol for the pain. Wobbly after and had some cramp and bleeding, but would highly recommend it. The scan I had 3 months later hurt more than the actual procedure

I had a mini copper coil fitted last May which lasts 5 years as, like you, I didn't want to put hormones into my body. It took 3 months initially to settle down, with very heavy, longer periods, no more pain than normal, then I returned to my regular cycle and all seemed fine.

In the past 2 months however, I've been on my period for 11 days each time, which isn't ideal as a swinger when it knocks out 1/3 of the month! I'm wondering whether to change for the Mirena as I don't want the faff of taking the pill and like the extra measure of contraception. Obviously every lady's body is different, so you won't know unless you try, but hope that's helps x

I have the Mirena and I Love it! had it 5 years (due to be changed in Dec) and I have never had a period, never had any hormonal issues.

Interesting thread. I was told because of my age (44) the only options would be the coil. I'm thinking the copper coil as there are no hormones involved and as I have very light to non existant periods, the risk of them becoming heavier would be fine.

The health practitioner I saw was less than helpful really and I did most of my research on the good old internet. I saw her last week for a smear test, asked about sterilsation and again, got a less than helpful response. Apparently I wouldn't qualify and that was that. Think I will go to a family planning clinic to find someone who can give better advice.

On the other side of sterilisation, please look in to PTLS symptoms before getting sterilized, just had to pay £4000 To get a reversal because of this. Natural birth control for us now ( condoms otherwise) and no I don't want any more babies I have 7 but couldn't live with the PTLS symptoms any longer.

I have the copper coil. I didn’t fancy the hormone interactions with my mood as suffered badly on the contraceptive pill previously. After reading the above I didn’t realise there is less hormone with the mirena coil else I might have given it a go.

My periods are heavier without a doubt. Not painful but going from a light 4 day period to a heavy 8 day period really sucks

So had very heavy periods and tried the mirena it didn’t suit me so I got offered an ablation

Basically I now have no womb lining and my periods are shorter abd very light unfortunately I’m not one of the lucky ones where it stops...........

Scariest thing is it takes 12 months or so for symptoms to show I had 35 out the list and doctors don't believe in it. Loads to read about it to make an informed decision xx good luck

I’ve used both.. I got pregnant while using the copper IUD. He’s 11 now!

I got the Mirena after having my daughter and had it on for the 5 years it lasts. It was very good at doing it’s contraceptive job- it killed my libido completely. And my husband used to feel the threads and didn’t like that. It also made me put on weight... my periods never went away but they were much lighter.

I had it out at the beginning of this year. Libido came back with a vengeance

and I lost 4 stone with diet and exercise, after having been trying for years!

Having said all this, I have friends who’ve had the Mirena and it’s worked great for them. It’s a very personal thing..

My reaction to the implant was totally different to the injection. Also if you have a bad reaction to the implant it can just be taken out whereas the injection has to wear off which can take months.

I haven't tried the coil. I was told it wouldn't be offered to me as I haven't had children. That was a few years ago so may have changed.

I haven't had kids - you need to ask for the mini coil. It might depend on your health authority as to whether they offer a five year one or a ten year one (five year ones are cheaper

This feels a lot like my experience. Very unhelpful and I’m considering the family planning clinic also - and I’m starting to consider sterilisation also. Good luck x

Thank you. I was amazed at the response I got. It was like you can do x or y, what do you want?? Err, some more info so I can decide would be good! Glad I'm not the only one, thought it was me!

The copper coil is more likely to leave you with heavier periods than the Mirena.

The mirena coils hormones only act locally.

I've had both. As a sufferer of endometriosis, the Mirena coil was an absolute god send.

Obviously everyone reacts differently
