no idea, what some may class as a professional job others may not

to be honest i really dont care what people do for a living, i've met guys who have been unemployed, i dont see someone who classes themself as a professional any more attractive than anyone else, as im after sex not their bank ballance

I suppose I have a professional occupation and I am professionally qualified - I don't feel the need to discribe myself as such though as it means nothing in this context

I would also never discribe myself as genuine as I cannot work out what that is supposed to mean in this context either (not wooden ? Not plastic ?)

i guess people mean, people who work in an office, not people who work in a shop, and in answer to someone elses question about class, i think it is alot to do with class.

we personally dont judge on job.. Mark works in IT and I currently work in an adult shop, but a couple of months ago i was a senior secretary and PA to project managers. till the fates delt me a duff hand.. so im not a professional anymore.. but mark still is.. do we both get tarred with my non professional brush? i dont see why we should. i am intelligent, i can hold a conversation and have had a professional job.. i think some people just need the rules in place to make them feel more special than they actually are.

I don't think the OP is mocking, seems just to be asking a question ( although another post does have rolly eyes at the end) but I do agree with you about people mocking others because they say they are professional.

I personaly can't see why it is a problem for others to accept, some people have jobs that can be classed as professional and are well within their rights to mention it if they want to.

Maybe it is inverted snobbery as you say.

I don't really see why people have a problem with this and if you have to ask then I would assume that you are probably not what they are looking for.

I do not think that when people describe themselves as professional they really are as literal as to mean professionally qualified or wealthy. They will not be comparing Masters Degrees at their meets.

It basically means that they are looking to meet others who are similar in background and educationally at a similar level than someone who is poorly educated and whose standards of living are different. Their lifestyles may be worlds apart to ever form a friendship. If people are too different then they will judge each other, possibly unfavourably.

We for instance would have little in common with people who drink, are loud in public and who swear in every sentence. We don't do that and therefore we are uncomfortable in the presence of those that do.

This probably does make me a huge snob but I cannot pretend to be a certain way just so not to offend others.

You clearly have never seen bankers out on their xmas party...the worst behaviour i have ever seen in pubs or clubs is from ex public school boys...though i have a soft spot for harrovians

Which is why i find the term redundant, and people who use it tend not to fit with my world view...i know people from judges to gamekeepers... have swung with all sorts...their job rarely tells u how they will behave.

I have seen many different types on their nights out and many would have been charged with public order offences too no doubt a certain percentage would be professionally qualified.

As I said the term is not literal, we are all aware that people can display bad behaviours whatever their walk of life, but I believe its a term used on fab to loosely indicate the type of person you are and to attract a similar type in the hope you share the same outlook.

Again why worry about how others describe themselves or what they are looking for. If people feel they don't quite meet the requests then don't message

I put it on my profile however I'm not entirely sure why. I'm well educated, I'm qualified in my chosen career and work in an industry/area I view as professionals (Doctors, Bankers, Lawyers etc)

For me it's about looking for someone who is similar to me, well educated, good job etc, maybe professional is the wrong word to use.

Certain careers are termed 'Professional' such as Doctors, airline pilots, solicitors and many others.

It means not only do they have to be qualified to do their job but they are subject to regular checks & reviews on their standard of work.

This implies they are respectable & trustworthy etc.

As already said it means someone who has to meet a certain standard in their work and career. This implies that they will be more trustworthy as they have more to lose if they act weird or do things that could be unlawful.

As for careers - Dr, teacher, solicitor, vet etc

Most professionals will keep quiet about what they do for fear of the bunny boiler meet!

Definition:

"anyone can be professional in their attitude or the way they carry out a task. But to be "a professional" implies being a member of a professional institution, having acquired the necessary qualifications, training and experience."

People describe themselves on their profile - using the word "professional" is descriptive of who they are. If you don't like it, then that's your personal choice, don't message them - but there's a lot of people who seem to assume certain prejudices and stereotypes associated with this word. Why? It's just describing part of who somebody is.Some people describe themselves as being in the services - maybe because they are proud of what they do and in some cases your job is part of your identity.

Well prostitution is supposed to be the oldest profession along with accountancy, but window cleaners can call themselves professional, as well janitors. Basically a professional is any one that obtains money from providing a service. So anyone who calls themselves a professional is trying to say that they have a job and an income. Of course it is but are there people on here who demand to see certificates of qualifications before they meet - are they really taking it that literally. Or do they simply want to meet with people with whom they may share a similar background with.

Again its down to interpretation. When I see the word professional on a profile I simply attribute that to someone who works for a living and enjoys a certain standard of living. Lilke any term used to describe oneself it can be entirely subjective.

I don't understand why people get so offended with others using it. Its simply a preference for the kind of people someone may wish to meet.

i dont think its offensive to to class yourself as a professional nor do i think its offensive to ask to only meet other professional people

I am a manager of a multi million pound company i suppose lots of people in my possition would class them self as having a professional job, i however do not its just a job that ive worked hard to achieve, do i only want to meet other people on a similar salary to mine? no of course i dont, i have met guys who have been unemployed before, does it mean i am better than them for having a job and more money than them? no it does not, does it mean they cant hold a converstion because they are out of work for a while? no it does not but there are lots of people who wouldnt entertain meeting someone out of work on here because the stigma people out of work are labeled with

but everyone if different, some people see having a good job, money and a flash car as a status symbol and like to make a point of letting everyone know they have a good job, and im not just talking on here i mean in all walks of life

But again each to their own

who people choose to meet is upto them and them alone and noone eles place to question it, even tho we may not understand it

Its short hand to indicate well spoken, educated, polite and an understanding of social etiquette. Also that im not a bit of rough (not criticising that) so if thats what you are after im no good to you. I dont look for professionals specifically, its to let others know i might not be what they want

I would consider qualified tradesmen as professionals too

Its not about wealth or class to me, it merely seperates the wheat from the chavs.

infact most people with drink probelms are from high profile jobs

It really is simple:

Can sign your passport = Professional

Works in an office = White collar

Others = Craftsman/tradesman/labourer cover most things (but not all)

To cloud the matter quite a few white collar workers mistake themselves for professionals as they wear a shirt and tie
