Pictures on laptop seen

Our laptop was running slow so I took it to my mate to sort out, loads of our pictures and videos of the Mrs were in a file I thought only us could access as it’s pin protected. Well anyway he sorted the laptop and said I managed to keep your pics and videos in your file, and replied FairPlay she looks amazing

We never send any of our devices for repair. Mr N can do most of it anyway and if he can't it gets the sledgehammer treatment.

No your not a private individual but if sent to a repair specialist/computer shop then they are.

Exactly! There is no legal reason for a company employed to identify and repair a fault to access any of your personal files. Even the Police can only do so where there is already a reasonable suspiscion that a crime may have been committed. It's protected by Article 8 of the Human Rights Act. Till we crash out of Europe in March anyway

Oh I had this when sorting out my Mac book with Apple, asked if he could take over my phone, as had trouble getting the pics to upload from my phone to the iCloud. Then all of a sudden my arse is on the screen, I said oops there’s my bottom and he replied oh yes there it is!

I thought companies such as PC World, had a duty of care to report to the police of any illegal activity found on devices that they repair. As with the Gary Glitter case.

It would depend on what needed doing to sort the computer, slow running can be a time consuming repair that can cost more in labour than the computer is worth.

My usual solution is to take out the disk put in a new one, and only put the required stuff onto the new disk. That will require looking at all folders and files.

In future you need an external disk for your intimate pictures which doesn't need to go to the repair shop with the laptop.

They do have to report stuff they find. The issue legally is that they shouldn't be looking. There are few issues they could not repair without needing to access beyond your Windows logon screen. And then there would still be the issue of why they violated your legal human right to privacy when it was not pertinent to the repair to have a nosey around.

A laptop is running slow so a guy is asked to fix it. The chap then de-junks it and tests how quickly it opens files with the obvious and that's files that are already on the laptop. Is it snooping? Maybe then maybe not as files on the pc seem the obvious thing to test it on as I see it.

The moral of this take is to always store sensitive information on removable media.
