I always thought the term tranny was a derogatory term for a transvestite , not transsexual, but I’m no expert.

Maybe it's a bit like the word queer. You can use it if you are but it's out of bounds if you're not.

If she was using it a slur of course it's offensive.

Also, some words you aren't allowed to use unless claiming them for yourself.

Yes it is almost always offensive. Given that the scientific term for non-transgender people is cisgender, how would you like to be colloquially called a cissie?

And while i defend your right to use the term Robyn, the problem is that so many f*ckwits in general society take your usage of it as licence to be freely offensive to everybody else in the tg community There are no easy answers to the conundrum I'm afraid. Polly xx

We used to hang around with trannies all the time . They frequented the same dogging spots as we did , and all of them were happy to be called trannies .

Some were pre op , some post op , some were hairy guys in a frock , some cds , some convincing and others far from it . But whatever , tranny was certainly not an insult .

You used to hang around with SOME transgender people. And while it may well be the case that those people did not object to the term when used within the confines of the dogging areas, or within the swinging environment, I can assure you that when "tranny" is yelled at you in the middle of a busy shopping centre, it most assuredly is meant to be an insult, and it certainly is offensive. As a general rule, cisgender people should not use this word unless they are prepared for the possibility of a punch in the face.

Robyn and Polly have an intresting debate.

Being honest I don't call people "tranny"

But I have about 4 gender definitions I'm willing to accept as logical.

I call someone he or she and if they are transgender I give them the prefered title.

But the new muliple genders I've started hearing honestly don't make much sence.

And now people are going beyond that.

Transgender people argue about it. Transgender conservatives vs transgender liberals.

I don't like being called "cisgender". Some people literally get angry at me in online debate for rejecting the title.

The word "cisgender" is the correct linguistic term for anybody that is not transgender. "Cis" is merely the opposite of "trans" in precisely the same way that "left" is the opposite of "right" and "up" is the opposite of "down". If you reject being called cisgender, then i suggest you should also reject being called male, and instead insist on being called "not female".

Fair enough if it's specific to the debate but otherwise "he" will be how I want to be reffered to.

There is male to female transgender

And female to male transgender

But I've herd alot more recently.

Haley cropper was the first I am aware of. Then my nextdoor neighbour.

In the 90s that was as far as it went.

I disapeared to Thailand.

I came back hear and there were about 60 new genders and sexualities to be aware of.

Some of them I dont think are valid.

I always saw it as a male-female spectrum/ratio inside the brain and not a distinct set of different lables.

"I thought it was just slang for a transvestite x"

In the same way that "p*ki" is slang for a person with ethic origin from Pakistan, and "n*gger" is just slang for a person of colour. It is a word that has been used for many years to shame and denigrate those who do not conform to the gender norms of society. As a general rule, if you are cisgender and you use that word, there is a 95% chance you will offend the person you are talking about.

Tranny is just short for Transvestite in the same way as Aussie is short for Australian.

Unfortunately, some people use the abbreviation tranny when saying negative things (good insults are short) so while it is just an abbreviation some people get upset about it's use even when not used negatively.

It is exactly the same with p*ki - just an abbreviation which now can't be used.

If haters started shouting insults such as "cigendered b*stard" will the word cisgendered not be allowed any more?

I think it is too much political correctness. I describe myself as a transvestite but don't mind being called a tranny if it is not done insultingly.

Yes Yvonne, but the problem is that every single time someone is overheard calling you "tranny" in a public place, it increases the permissiveness for the hateful use of the word. It is unarguable fact that the word has been used offensively for many years, to beat down one of the last unprotected minorities. We are finally starting to stand up and be noticed, to fight for our right to be treated fairly and decently. I stand by my point. If someone is not transgender they should NEVER use the term. If someone is transgender they should never use it in public.

If someone is a public figure, a politician or a television personality, and they use the word, then they deserve sacking exactly as much as if they called somebody "p*ki" or "n*gger" or any of the hateful terms for disabled people that I'm not even going to write with letters starred out.

Interesting thread that has the lot. I shall overlook the implied threat of assault and focus on how terminology can often get lost in regional variations that cannot translate on the internet. For example in deep pockets of the West Country an identifiable female CIS or otherwise is going to be referred to as “maid” and would expect it too. Say that in London and see what happens!

I have no idea why people delight in all this self labelling about their gender identity and sexual preferences all they are achieving is polarising themselves even further from mainstream society instead of integrating.

I am delighted to refer to anyone in any way they wish and I will fight for anyone’s right to pursue a personal life with the gender of their choice but is there really any need to have a thousand labels that essentially say gay straigh or bi?

It’s a shame that people aren’t respected for thier lifestyles these days. And these same people become persecuted and banned from society for speaking thier minds and being truthful while at the same time arseholes can come into our life’s and just condem and abuse people while hiding behind a keyboard sniggering into their jelly pots. O so amusing it can be to watch. NOT

I am just contributing to the thread and stating a fact.... obviously you like to be offensive by using foul language

I’m sure my learned friend didn’t mean the explitives However it does perfectly illustrate the point. I have a friend who delights in calling himself a "kinky fucker". But if i use the word to refer to you, you are quite rightly offended. And that is without any background of the word "fucker" having fifty years of being used to attack a minority group. Although being a profile holder on the fabswingers site, i presume that like most of us on here you do fuck, and hence are a fucker. We all are. It's just a statement of fact. Just using a word.

If you are happy to use an offensive word, just because you have a mate who says its okay, then you have relinquished all rights of complaint when anybody applies any offensive term to yourself.

I find it offensive as its usually used in a derogatory manner...

I have trans friends who dont mind it and some use it to an extent, they're in the minority though as most trans people I know dislike it. I respect their right to use it, but I think it gives the general public the opinion its ok to use it.

If someone refers to Me by it I'll politely point out I don't like it, please don't call me it again.... if they do keep using it, then we're gonna have a major problem.

I hate the term as the only times I have ever heard it used is as a derogatory name for a transvestite.

Well, that was until I came across the ftm porn star Buck Angel who actively uses it and calls himself a tranny. According to him it started as a trans thing and there is nothing derogatory about it.

I don't agree with him and would never call someone, or accept being called, a tranny.

It’s about education, some people are slow in the up take and say it without realiseing they are being offensive, of course if used in a degroarty manner it’s totally unexceptable, but we live in a changing society you will always get narrow minded people who can only judge and be abbusive

Depends who you ask.

Personally I have always referred to myself as a tranny, and when I started going out as Sam the phrase was in common use.

It is only in the last few years or so that I have heard people objecting to it. In general I would say avoid the word tranny unless you know the person well enough to know they will not be offended (or you are talking about a radio, van or transmission)
