Why is there so much bad spelling and grammar on this site? Does swinging attract more unintelligent people? I’d like to meet a single woman or couple who can spell.

Spelling prowess doesn't indicate intelligence.... Many intelligent people couldn't spell for shit, many had dyslexia.

Don't get too hung up on spelling... It's just once aspect of a whole person. Tends not to have any correlation on how well they fuck either

Not everyone can spell and it probably wouldn't put me off. However some have errors in the spelling of where they live. Now that puts me off more so, maybe because they can't be arsed to change it.

Spelling and grammar do not indicate intelligence there can be many reason reasons for bad spelling, dyslexia being one but the main reason is predictive text, my phone is terrible for changing perfectly spelt words for others and often I am in too much of a rush to read back what I have written.

Dyslexia spelling and crap spelling are different. There's a heavily dyslexic forum regular and his spelling is perfectly easy to understand. More logical than correct spelling in many ways.

Intellect and spelling/grammar aren’t mutually exclusive.

I’m dyslexic, with an IQ around 150. Yet without spell check, my spelling would be awful. When I’m trying to reply quickly, I don’t have time to proof read what I write multiple times, so sometimes mistakes happen.

Funny thing is, they’re are very strong links between IQ and dyslexia. Also studies shows those of average intelligence offen have better spelling.

My exprience it’s always been those who are average, see themselves as above average, that fixate on and criticise people grammar/spelling.

I'd imagine there is no more or less bad spelling within this group of people than there is anywhere else - only difference being that a lot of this lifestyle depends upon the written word whereas the Womens Institute knitting circle probably does not therefore the poor spelling, although probably still present, does not manifest itself in such spectacular fashion. To suggest that people are unintelligent because of their spelling skills is just a tad below the belt though.

I've always been an excellent speller and growing up it baffled me how people struggled with spelling since I thought it was really easy.

I've since learned how the part of the brain that is used for spelling is just highly developed in some people but not others. It's to do with memory and not intelligence. Richard Branson is a famous dyslexic but you would never call him stupid.

Some people are just lazy and don't care about good spelling though, unfortunately. Oh, and I also learned correcting people's spelling and grammar tends to annoy them unless they ask you to. It's hard not to sometimes though lol.

It’s a put off yes, I can’t help being put off by mistakes.

It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t meet them though, there are far worse things that would put me off meeting someone.

Of course there is more to people than the way they spell, however it still makes me wince. Then I spell it the correct way in my head, just a thing I do.

My older sister is dyslexic, and I’d never judge those who are, I regularly correct her in a helpful way and she doesn’t mind it one bit! As I said, you can tell when someone has made a few mistakes and when someone just can’t be arsed.

I am automatically put off when someone types in text speak or has poor spelling/grammar. Snobby it may be, but I can’t help it!

So if someone writes a very well thought out, articulate and intelligent post, but makes spelling mistakes, you’re still put off?

It’s a put off yes, I can’t help being put off by mistakes.

It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t meet them though, there are far worse things that would put me off meeting someone.

Of course there is more to people than the way they spell, however it still makes me wince. Then I spell it the correct way in my head, just a thing I do.

My older sister is dyslexic, and I’d never judge those who are, I regularly correct her in a helpful way and she doesn’t mind it one bit! As I said, you can tell when someone has made a few mistakes and when someone just can’t be arsed. "

What I find hard with this, some of the stupidest most idiotic posts I’ve seen, have had correct spelling/grammar.

I got attacked by a woman's friends on Facebook the other day because she wrote a huge long status and it was all in one paragraph with no full stops. I commented something like, "a couple of full stops would have been nice."

Her friends were like, "how dare you criticise my friend!" etc and these few women were basically ganging up on me. Ridiculous.

Ok, so to be serious for a moment, it would be fair to say some might be uneducated and others just lazy in their spelling/grammar. But neither necessarily makes the individual stupid?

And for what it's worth, I share your irritation for text speak or poorly written messages.

I totally agree, it does not take much time to ensure correct spelling and punctuation, before sending a message. I also detest text speak as it takes me too long to work out the meaning of the message.. I may add I am dyslexic and work hard to ensure I spell correctly..

Spelling is one thing. That is a widespread issue given the state of the educational system in this country. The same goes for non-existent punctuation, although I would be wary of someone who does not separate their sentences in some way - I cannot communicate with someone who speaks in paragraphs without taking a breath. However, what is the deal with people who do not know the difference between "know" and "no", or those who write "are" instead of "our" and "a" instead of "I"? Is it some regional quirk? Never come across that before.

Maybe you could expand your profile more with your extensive vocabulary.

The English language is quite a difficult one to comprehend, especially with all the grammar rules.

I really do not have an issue with anyone's spelling, unless it's complete nonsense. E.g. u, wot, ur.

Just like in the real world I guess.

I personally think with the use of the internet poor spelling and lack of grammar is just more noticeable.

Its not like when your in a pub you ask the person your chatting up to write you a quick synopsis of what they like and are looking for.

Plus some of us are dyslexic or have learning difficulties that you can't see.

I can honestly say that no one has ever got me into bed by being grammaticaly correct or being able to spell.

It does serve as a good indicator of who won't though, people who bitch about spelling and grammar certainly won't.

I haven’t read the whole thread, but why do you think people who are bad at spelling and grammar are ‘unintelligible’? There’s a big difference between someone who’s too lazy to bother, than someone who makes the odd typo and/or has a learning difficulty, i.e. dyslexia.

I make the odd typo, but my daily sex doesn’t always allow me to recognise it, even after proofreading it several times over. What does show laziness is text speak.

Making a spelling mistake doesn’t make someone less intelligent

My partner has fat fingers and sometimes catches the wrong letter in words and I’ve got hypersensitivity amongst other problems where sometimes my phone won’t acknowledge that I’ve actually touched anything or it’ll put in a letter that’s next to the one I’d intended for use! As long as the message makes sense and not watcha up2 what does it matter?

With autocorrect there really aren’t too many excuses unless the writer really doesn’t know how to construct a sentence or rules of grammar.

What winds me up is the incorrect use of off/ of, to / too, an / and if I ever use there instead of they’re or their and your instead of you’re please assume I’ve been taken hostage and am signalling for help!

It's all down to attention to detail. If you're writing a profile or leaving a verification and you can't take the time to make sure you've spelled the words correctly, some may see this as having a 'couldn't care less' attitude.

If that's the attitude expressed when trying to impress someone into meeting, then it begs the question whether they would have the same attitude when meeting in person.

We'd sooner meet people who go that extra mile to make the effort. That way we are more confident they'll do the same when getting jiggy.

Of course, we understand that everyone who gets picked up for poor spelling and grammar suddenly becomes a dyslexia sufferer, thus excusing themselves from all liability of 'not giving a sh#t'.

It's a mixture. Grammar is down to the individual, however spelling is a lot to do with using a tiny phone keyboard plus abysmal auto correct and never proof reading because it isn't that important. Then the rest is just poor spelling, normally obvious which.Their and there isn't a typo, becos isnt a typo, diswstbliabment looks bad but could easily be.

We aren't discussing employment on this thread.

"

It's a big turn off for me.

Me too. And seriously, with predictive text, how could you?!

I wonder if they see the correct suggestion and decide... nope, not for me...I can spell that better my own way!

A question mark followed by an exclamation mark?

Using a line of full stops to punctuate, rather than a comma or semi colon?

And you're crtiquing others?

Quality......

It's called an ellipsis.

Google it.

I know what it's called.

What's it called when you put an exclamation mark after a question mark?"

I used both because it is both a question and I’m also surprised by it.

See definitions below.

And please refer to the term mentioned by above poster regarding ‘...’

Question Mark [?] Use a question mark at the end of a sentence to show a direct question. ...

Exclamation Mark [!] Use an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence to show surprise or excitement. ...

You’re welcome

"Why is there so much bad spelling and grammar on this site? Does swinging attract more unintelligent people? I’d like to meet a single woman or couple who can spell.

Spelling prowess doesn't indicate intelligence.... Many intelligent people couldn't spell for shit, many had dyslexia.

Don't get too hung up on spelling... It's just once aspect of a whole person. Tends not to have any correlation on how well they fuck either "

Dyslexia rules ko

For me it's more often a case of fat fingers, small phone screen and a tendency not to proof read before pressing post.

On here I tend to type as I talk. At work I can turn it on. I'm known for a well written complaints email and get the results I want.

London & Edinburgh

I respect and value good spelling and grammar as much as the next person, but in all honesty there are greater priorities when I am chatting with fellow Fabbers here!!!!

A question mark and an exclamation mark both contain a full stop. They are both therefore the end of a sentence.

To use them both one after the other is poor grammar.

I love that you're now making up your own grammatical rules to defend your own poor use of it.
