It's a numbers approach. If you offer yommeet literally anyone, and spread your messages as far and wide as possible, making sure you don't try and engage too much in conversation, if you do get a reply at all, chances are it's either the type of new person who hasn't figured out ignoring these messages is easier and they'll then have at least started a conversation, or they'll get a yes, no effort required.

It's genius and stupid in equal measure.

Not a tactic I'd bother with, but I understand the logic.
