"Love to get out on the bike for a bit. Not quick but can happily do 50 miles or so. Have put myself down for a 100 mile charity ride in May. Eek. So far half distance and 2/3 speed. Bit of work to do and not much time" Go out for 1 or 2 70 mile plus rides a week, with 3 shorter rides around 40 miles and work on speed. You'll see good results in that time. But before your first century you need to be well rested and have 3 days of staying on a strict diet to get you body ready. I've done a few centuries and they take a toll.

Spds for commuting and cleats for going out on rides. Only use flats on my mountain bike though. Don't feel safe doing down hill and free ride cliped in. "I don’t disagree with cycling at all it’s a great form of exercise and a great way to see the countryside but it should be banned from our roads as cycling on roads causes road tax paying and totally insured motorists huge disruption. "I’d say bike fit isn’t right for you. Could be all manor of things. Top tube wrong length, stem length wrong. Saddle height incorrect, pedal arms wrong length, Frame wrong size in general If you can I’d get to your local bike shop and get a fitment done. There not expensive and will save pain after a ride. Mr " Thanks very much, sound advice, I've adjusted as much as I can without getting a fitting done, might be time to give it a go. Cheers

This is based on the vehicles emissions. A bicycle has no emissions, there fore no tax to pay. As for insurance most cyclists have insurance from a professional governing body, such as the BCF, CTC, RTTC, etc. If not it is with their home insurance.

"Enjoyed reading this thread, haven't been able to cycle for 6 years really and feel envious of everyone. Was never an expert but pretty capable IMO. Had just done my first 60miler on 29.9.12 and was raring to do it again the next day before factors intervened. Does having a road bike make a big difference cos I was doing it on a Trek? I remember only being able to get to a certain speed and feeling I was at the bike's limit but not my own. I am fortunate to have long legs which I'm sure was helpful for long steep hills, I guess the same way a jack is able to lift a car?" With generally narrower wheels & road tyres that tend to be slicker than MTB etc, a road bike will make a difference. With a previous road bike, I also felt that I could give more, but couldn't get the bike to give it. Changed the gearing on it & instantly better.

"Sorry, but I hate f**king cyclists. I live and work in a rural area, and I work any of 7 days a week. Trying to get to work at weekends is miserable down to the hoards of Lycra clad townie-tossers who think the countryside is their own personal theme-park. Several weekends they even try to shut down local roads for Club competitions, roads local to where I live, not them!! I’m certainly not alone in my hatred of these bastards!" Snappa, I too live in the countryside, drive a car as well as cycle. As is usual when someone displays hatred using such vile language; it says more about you than the people you so dislike. I only hope that your ability to control these feelings is a little better when you are behind the wheel. Gg

"Vile language???? Really??? Awww Snowflake xx Sorry, but I hate f**king cyclists. I’m certainly not alone in my hatred of these bastards! Snappa, Maybe you should change your bio from “considerate gent seaking unhurried fun” as clearly both of these seem to be incorrect! "

"In my own time, I do like things unhurried, but when I’m going to work, the clients get the jump if I turn up late. I probably should say, i don’t have any issue with cyclists on their own or horse riders. It’s the gangs who seem to revel in clogging up country lanes at weekends, often deliberately preventing safe overtaking. On Sunday, a 30 mile trip across Sussex, I encountered 6 different packs of these evil beasts, all dressed up like their favourite druggy sporting heroes. Vile language???? Really??? Awww Snowflake xx What’s your sport of choice? Sorry, but I hate f**king cyclists. I live and work in a rural area, and I work any of 7 days a week. Sun on bare flesh was great. Honking head wind once I'd left the cliff road less so. Still means I can eat the entire contents of the fridge now.
