Well I've got the families boat on the Trent and Mersey canal not too far from Jn 24 of the M1.

I haven't out the tea pot on the roof yet, not least as my elderly parents sometimes take the boat out!

We were thinking of buying a canal barge and refurbishing it but other things always seem to get in the way.

Now that I know about the TeaPot trick it might reinvigorate our efforts.

The tea pot is the old signal for a boater that is willing to lend a hand. In days gone by, the implication was if you got stuck or were in need you could spot this type of help easily.

More recently, the implied help is the swing context.

Swinging is extremely popular on the waterways!

As for buying a boat, take your time and the best bargains are often identified in the Autumn and Winter as mooring fees start to stack up. If you fancy through David's Cruising the Cut on you tube, you'll be hooked in no time.

We had a few canal boat weekends before we had kids.

The last one we did was on the Llangollen Canal, starting at Ellesmere. The Chirk tunnel and aqueduct was an experience and we conceived our first kid on the boat too

Just been battered by a big guy after I boarded his barge and suggested we got down to business with his Mrs who was sunbathing on the roof !

Thankfully they made me a cup of tea after I explained and drove me to A&E for stitches.

Helping hand indeed !
