The trouble is that is often hard to think what to write initially and surly it is a polite way of maybe starting a conversation that will obviously become more in depth, equally I have sometimes written a reasonably long introduction only for that to either be read and deleted or simply deleted so it's a hard thing to get right I guess.

This is NOT , I REPEAT NOT a moan .......

The apposing view to this is, if we men (I include myself here) write the most polite, well mannered message to introduce themselves to say a couple or single fem, we are still likely to ignored - sadly the vast majority don't even try ,

Conversely I have had one MF couple and a women message me today with just "hi there" ....nothing else

When I've sent a first message, it's always well thought out as I'm a stickler for reading profiles first, to make sure I fit their criteria. The issue is, the blanket messaging mentality and hoping for a bite. Plus it's only fine, if the men allow it to be fine

This is why I very rarely send messages. A profile has to really pique my interest to warrant the amount of time involved in writing a message that will ultimately just be ignored anyway. It's a hard life

Online can't be compared to real life. In real life, that initial attraction can be felt from setting eyes on each other. Online, a little work needs to be put into the initial message, to grab someone's attention, as there is no physical contact to gage whether someone may be interested in taking it a little further or not.

If I get 50-100 messages a day, I can only answer maybe half a dozen (while continuing my actual, real, offline life that does useful things like pay my mortgage or ensure I eat home cooked food at night).

With that in mind, am I more likely to answer a well thought out, funny message from someone whose profile seems to indicate I’d get on with, or a message saying just, “Hi there.”

I send first messages too - and I agonise over them. And sometimes I get a reply, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the conversation fizzles, sometimes it ends in a meet. I definitely don’t moan about an unsuccessful attempt (though I may be a little sad if I quite liked the look of their profile).

It seems more than a little harsh that guys get their knickers in a twist about this, as they often do in these threads. I’m not here to answer you. I really won’t if your initial message is under ten words because I don’t have enough to work with.

That, and I’m an inveterate chatterbox so I really am only going to get along with someone else like me

The fact is, guys don't moan about getting "hi" messages at all. I just decided to point out that we get them too, we just don't come on the forum berating the couples and single ladies that send them.

And yet I reply to so many initial messages and I'm not the only one!

They don't all lead to anything for all sorts of reasons, some based on my choice but many at theirs - people who don't like the look of me, fantasists with no intention of meeting, men who get bored waiting a few days before I'll meet them for a coffee and so on. So why create a rule that would result in so many lost opportunities!

The best messages are those from someone who contacts me interested in my profile, asking for a face pic (of course without theirs...), I reply with a pic that eventually doesn't convince them (which is totally respectable) and there is not reply but blocking you.

The anonymity can hide their rudeness for a moment, but eventually their personality is nothing but mediocre...
