Fashion advice!

Hi all, bit of advice needed! Off to an event next weekend and it’s ‘black tie optional’. Not a big fan of a tuxedo, doesn’t really suit me, so wearing a smart black suit but need to get something to go with it! Question is what shirt and tie combo looks best? What colour and style etc? And do I go for a waistcoat with it or not?

Any advice happily received

So first suggestion is red tie and white shirt! Any advances?

No to the waistcoat. They went out years ago.

There are some smart white shirts with a navy or black trim around the collar front seam and cuffs. Then whatever colour tie you want. If you get navy trim, then navy tie

Does a smart black suit look much different to a tuxedo?

It’s more the bow tie and band but I’m not as fussed on. Prefer shirt and tie!

Have a snazzy waistcoat under the black suit, but a well fitted one.

Nooo not a black shirt with a black suit.

I like to see a crisp white shirt with a black suit. The choice of tie is up to you but I like a gorgeous turquoise silk or a classy pattern definitely not comedy.

When it comes right down to it wear what you feel looks good

I won’t be going to the comedy route lol. Black tie would make me look like I’m going to a funeral lol so maybe a splash of colour!

Yes. I feel sorry for men who need to wear suits there's so little room for expression of individuality. That's why I suggested a beautifully coloured tie.

Mind you there is something about a guy in a well cut suit...

Snazzy anything for a black tie do is bad taste in my book..Classical black ond white or dark smart suit as per 007 and you can't go wrong. Leave the stunning outfits to the ladies and never loosen your tie and undo your top shirt button before after party nooky..looks scruffy....

Last time I was wearing a suit I ended up putting the tie to good use, so here’s hoping

The Tantric Tea Shop

Black suit, white winged collar shirt and bow tie (the kind you tie not the fixed ones), looks classy and at end of night undo bow tie and shirt top button and classy but cool and can take jacket off

Black trousers. Cream jacket. White shirt. Red bow tie. So obvious I can't believe I even have to say it.

Or, grey t suit. Different grey shirt. Think black tie. Cloth cap. Converse. The classic outfit for anything from state funeral to royal wedding. See pics

“Black tie optional” generally translates as “don’t worry about the formality of bowties and cummerbunds”.

A well fitted black suit with white shirt and a dark (pref black) tie. Job done.

I'd say skip the waistcoat, white or grey shirt and have a look for a good black or dark tie. You can get some nice ties for formal events with a little subtle embellishment that makes them less daytime office wear. I'm thinking of ones I've seen with the odd crystal or shot with metallic thread.
