Poor grammar

discombobulated land

Now, is it just me or does anyone else get very frustrated when they read a profile or receive a message that is littered with grammatical errors? To me it just smacks of low educational standards (do I sound like a snob saying that?)

Text speak too...sorry but that is ridiculous. I've received messages that even a WW2 Enigma machine would have failed to crack!

I know. We live in a fast moving society nowadays but surely we should try and keep some standards?

I tend to give some ground at first.

I'll raise my had and say my grammar is not the best when I'm on here on my phone, but I try to make it the best possible if im on my laptop.

So I try to remember that.

That said text speak is an instant turn off. A girl would have to be special for me to still fancy her after seeing that.

Yes! It really irks me as well. One or two errors in a message i can forgive but your/you're type confusions and the like make me wince and put me off. I know I'm not bere for 3000 word essays on British politics but I do need to be on the same wavelength as someone and if I'm cringing with every message it doesn't feel worth it.

No. I don’t get frustrated. It has no impact on my day whatsoever. Unless it’s an apostrophe before every fucking S...... then I develop a twitch.

There are many instances of poor English but one must wonder where the problem is. The education system must take a good bit of the blame. However, some usage totally baffles me, why is 'like' used in so many wierd and inappropriate places?

To be fair I agree with much of your sentiment in relation to using the phone. I often struggle to ensure all is correct but I do try to proof read my messages before I hit the big send button. Up until recently I used to use Swype but my god, you wouldn't believe some of the messages I've sent without realising so it's now back to quick thumb typing for me!

Grammar does matter to us and can make a huge difference in what people are trying to say......

It's the difference between "Helping your Uncle Jack, off a horse" and "Helping your Uncle jack off a horse..."

Some retard will be a long to tell you that you've missed an apostrophe or a comma somewhere in that, but yes it's very off putting. Then another moron will play the dyselxia card. But basically people judge you on how you write online, just like they judge you on how you speak in real life. Typos don't bother me, but text speak does.

I love reading the profiles of those who hate bad spelling/grammar/punctuation/whatever.

It's highly amusing most of the time. If you wanna criticise others, you better make sure you're own is shit hot, and can't possibly have holes picked in it.

We're self-confessed grammar nazis, and we make no apologies for it.

Some people want their prospective meets to be shaven, or to have written something as a message header, or to jump through this hoop or that. All we ask is a decent message.

No but then we judge on a second by second basis. Can we really say we don’t fancy that obese, foul smelling person with poor personal hygiene if we aren’t Brad or Angelina?

For some people intelligence is more important than looks in deciding who they want to sleep with, that’s just their preference.

This is a website for sex for fuck's sake...and I have no desire to read the views on politics, culture or educational standards that are published in this Forum.

Similarly I do not come to this website to find out if someone can spell correctly, knows the difference between a colon and semi colon or can tell me the meanings of infer and imply.

Snobby pedants can't fuck.

What standards? It's a site for shagging. Not everyone is great at writing or typing. They may be perfectly nice people and a great fuck.

However, if it annoys you then it's easy to avoid those profiles.

Txt spk ws brought abt in WW2 when SMS messaging was first discovered and used. I find I can usually decipher what most messages say and that's because I have a wide a varied experience of people. So many "professionals" here can't string a sentence together correctly but does that make him more reliable? A liar? A time waster?

Grammar snobbery? No I don't so, more like lacking something. Being able to use correct grammar does not make you above anyone or any nearer the perfect swinger. It's the people that matter not some fake notion of "education"

Yes it bothers me. Most people have pet peeves and poor spelling/grammar is one of mine. I don't mind If it is readable, but to the extent where I'm having to work out where the punctuation goes is fairly frustrating.

As for text speak, I believe that's for the under 20s and it really bugs me! ! Just laziness.

Text speak too...sorry but that is ridiculous. I've received messages that even a WW2 Enigma machine would have failed to crack!

It’s people’s inability to read that irks me on here, rather than their grasp of spelling or grammar.

They ask questions that they would know the answers to if they had just read the profile

That’s when I had a profile setting out exactly what I was and wasn’t looking for

Good morning all anyway

No it’s doesnt really bother me, but I guess im more forgiving of it because I’m dyslexic, so I have to really try myself to write correctly and know I can still make mistakes regardless.

I even have to my phone screen tinted yellow because then I can read it easier

One of my favourite posters on the forums is seeside because I can read his posts with very little effort, because he spells everything as he phonetically hears it, when he speak the words, and the way my brains wired with my dyslexia it’s just easier for me to read

This post may have only taken someone else a minute to type and posts it’s taken me 15 mins with 2 proof reads

"I love reading the profiles of those who hate bad spelling/grammar/punctuation/whatever.

It's highly amusing most of the time. If you wanna criticise others, you better make sure you're own is shit hot, and can't possibly have holes picked in it. "

Exactly this, there are so many spelling and grammatical errors in the posts in this thread from people bitching about exactly that.

You really should sort your shit out before throwing it at others

Well said .

I can honestly say that I have no idea how well educated the vast majority of our meets have been . We have never entertained the thought that a spelling / grammar test may be a good idea as a part of our vetting process .

I would hope if we ever needed to consider this , that someone would pull us up and ask us why . At this moment in time I would not be able to provide an answer , as I’m not a pretentious twat who cares one iota how well educated potential meets may be .

Uggggg!! Tho shalt not let language evolve??

If language was not fluid then us Brits would still be speaking like Shakespeare wrote or each text message we received could be mistaken for an addition to the original 10 commandments!

Speaking of which, although we believe the commandments have been largely outdated by modern living - we still stick to not coveting our neighbours oxen!!!

I've learned not to judge on messages alone,I actually met one guy who pestered me to meet him,but his messages weren't great in the respect he didn't really say much and I couldn't get a feel for him. He basically grunted one or two word's.

I just thought sod it and met him, which I'm glad I did because he was so different face to face,he was chatty and engaging. I now never judge on message's alone.

I find it quite odd that something people use to decide whether they wan't to sleep with someone or not is so contentious.

If someone were to say that they get annoyed by people turning up for meets with really bad BO would people start saying they are a snob and what does it matter if someone stinks or not?

Some people don't want to fuck a smelly person, some people don't want to fuck people who can't string together a coherent sentence, what's the difference?

Personally I find good spelling and grammar quite attractive in a person, I'm attracted to intelligence. Yes there are people who are poor spellers or have English as a second language but are intelligent and that will come through in their message.

It's the effort made that's important, I think it's a good indicator as to the effort they'll put in between the sheets.

It probably isn't perfectly written but as I'm trying not to deal in absolutes it doesn't really matter. If something isn't perfect that doesn't mean it's terrible, the world isn't black and white.

I didn’t contradict myself at all, as I said just because something isn’t black it doesn’t mean it’s white. There are shades of grey and it just depends on how grey you like things.

I’m sure there are things you don’t like but you will put up with a certain amount of but once it gets to a certain point you draw the line. That’s how I feel about grammar and spelling.

It's the effort made that's important, I think it's a good indicator as to the effort they'll put in between the sheets.

I don’t necessarily agree, besides your reply isn't perfectly written. Shall we judge you on how well you have sex?

It probably isn't perfectly written but as I'm trying not to deal in absolutes it doesn't really matter. If something isn't perfect that doesn't mean it's terrible, the world isn't black and white.

People have different values and that's great, it means we're all going to get laid and likely not all by the same people. I prefer someone who makes an effort with their messages, you don't. I don't criticise you for that, more power to you in fact as it means we aren't after the same folk!

That's a shame for you then as you may be missing out on a great meet,I've learned to be a little more fluid.

Just because someone may not be tiptop in their grammar and spelling a bit like yourself I may add, doesn't mean to say they're going to turn up in a tracksuit and trainers, speak in text talk and stink of body odour with their teeth falling out!

Again, as I’ve now said on a number of occasions, grammar and spelling doesn’t have to be perfect I just like it to be of a certain standard.

Never mind spelling and grammar there seems to be a problem with comprehension too."

There does indeed...

Just express yourself! If people like how/what you write then fine. If not they'll move on.

"I love reading the profiles of those who hate bad spelling/grammar/punctuation/whatever.

It's highly amusing most of the time. If you wanna criticise others, you better make sure you're own is shit hot, and can't possibly have holes picked in it.

There’s a huge difference between the odd mistake in a message and something that google chrome offers to translate into English for you."

No it means you are a moron if you claim dyslexia makes you write like a chav. That's not what dsylexia is. Hence why i said playing a card.

I just don't presume people are going to be crap in bed because their spelling and grammar isn't top notch that's all. Some people can't see that though from high up on that pedestal they've stuck themselves on,especially when it's cloudy up there.

It’s not that I presume they will be crap in bed it’s that I doubt I will fancy them enough for us to get there. Someone can be incredibly handsome with a great body and a big cock but if they don’t engage my mind I won’t fancy them.

It’s just a different filter, some people don’t like overweight people, some don’t like people who are very hairy. These people also may be incredible in bed but if they don’t get you wet then are they ever likely to get you there?

I've never found a correlation between someone's ability to read and write and their ability to engage me..one has nothing to do wit the other generally. It's more what they write than how they write it. As long as I can understand it, I'm fine with that.

Besides, it's not always a reflection in their level of education, there are other factors that might effect a person's writing/grammar.

I totally agree. There really is no excuse, most of us have had a free education where good grammar is taught at an elementary level.

Speech is another indicator. When people substitute th with an f, we give them a wide berth.

I am speechless ! Since when grammar and misspell in correlated or an reflection of IQ ? Rubbish and you guys call yourself inteligent! Have extremely inteligent people , who are great in maths or science and crap in English !! In fact the grammar /spelling has more to do with analytic skills !!! More stupid is to be attracted to the way they write! In a sex site? Furthermore compare poor grammar with personal hygiene ? Who would sleep with a smelly person? This comments are beyond ridiculous ! Honestly I think people are full of shit ! If they meet a hot couple ,they will hand a note book and say :please let me check your grammar to see if I am attracted to you guys! Bullshit ! My father is not academic but a very sharp business man ,he is a builder ,he makes anything people can imagine ,excellent maths skills and he is not great in spelling etc!! I no wonder is hard here for the guys ! I am not here to improve my English and don't give a shit for who does ! You can be inteligent and successful ,even you cannot spell ! That's it !!

Happy now?

Well we're all different and if some people put emphasis upon an educated conversation reflected by their speech and grammar, then so be it. We can't all have the same views but we can at least be tolerant of other's preferences.

Do you reply to all the unsolicited junk mail and emails that are delivered through your letterbox or to your email address ?

You sent a message, they don't want to play,so why do you need a message back ?

Chances are all they would say would be "thanks but your not my type" and you might reply, "why" so they'd rather not bother in the first place.

For me poor English stands out on a page, I mean I can glance at a paragraph and my eye is immediately drawn to the error.

I don't make any assumptions about the sender, as it's not relevant, it's just a thing I have about the language itself.

With some people it's numbers.

It doesn't irk me, I just notice it, especially the common ones like were, where and we're or there, they're and their.

It doesn't bother us at all, unless its txt speak that we cannot understand.

Its preferable to some of the crap profiles on here.

Not everyone can be great at spelling or punctuation, as long as they can communicate well ,no problem

If a profile doesn't appeal to you, just delete the message or move on to one that does.

"Now, is it just me or does anyone else get very frustrated when they read a profile or receive a message that is littered with grammatical errors? To me it just smacks of low educational standards (do I sound like a snob saying that?)

Text speak too...sorry but that is ridiculous. I've received messages that even a WW2 Enigma machine would have failed to crack!

I know. We live in a fast moving society nowadays but surely we should try and keep some standards?

Not always as this isn't an english lesson and with stupid predictive text,it's easily done. Or they may talk like that. Is it wrong to actually text how you actually speak?. My dad's Jamaican and the way i word tings is because that's how i speak. Text speak is just laziness ha. But again not necessary an indication that that won't be your type. Yes you do sound like a snob in my opinion "

Nothing wrong with being a snob....plenty of others out there that think alike and are also snobs....so as someone else has said....just another filter

If I ever use your instead of you're and there instead of they're in the same sentence, then my meet has gone wrong and I am signalling for help.

"I am speechless !

I'm not the embassador, merely the catalyst for the thread.

I love it dark, how dark can you get it? Xxx

Since being on here I have read a number of profiles containing loads of text but with no paragraphs, punctuation or capital letters. Now, I'm no grammar Nazi but it does make for tricky reading not knowing exactly where one sentence ends and another begins. Also, the spelling of 'know' as 'no' or 'no' as 'know' which makes it hard to know if know means no or no means no

Blimey, looks like I missed out on yet another interesting thread.

OP - I don't get frustrated. My grammar could be better, but not an issue for me. I only interact with people who take my profile and messages as they are... I can't change or 'improve' to match others 'standards' because I like the way I am.

In my experience the Fabbers who don't sweat the small stuff tend to have the most fun, but they do sweat bucket loads when having fun. Strange, but true!

"Unless you plan to spend a whole meet playing Scrabble or doing crosswords, I'm not sure why it would be such a drama.

Love that. me too! That remind me to take an English dictionary to my next club visit!!!!

And Scrabble.

Excellent idea! scrabble tick! Lol "

Haha could be onto something here you know!

New fun and games at clubs

It must be so frustrating for you having to decipher messages from all the educationally challenged members on the site.

Why is it that in this day and age some people still do not understand that other people can be less able to read and write correctly through no fault of their own.

So why is this happening in this day and age? Is it that the education system is failing people or has failed people in the past? Or is it that more people than is realised are genuinely not capable of meeting educational standards set at secondary schools? (Not referring to those whose English is not their first language.)

I think poor standards of grammar in life in general happens for a variety of reasons......educational establishments don't meet everyone's needs - some children don't fit the 'norm', don't fit in, don't engage and leave school with poor levels of knowledge and skills.

I think poor standards of grammar on fabs happens because sometimes the person is genuinely lacking in grammar skills but often they don't pay attention to details like grammar and spelling because they think cock pics are more important

...it makes a good deal of difference on sites like this especially if someone is stating 'no' to something, but litters the text with misspellings of know/no, then who knows what they are really trying say...eg "Know anal aloud"!!..frustrating because they could be missing out on some fun!!

Yes, that's kind of what i meant in my last post but you said it more succinctly!!..that is, good people maybe missing out because of confusing profile text because, well, it's confusing

The your/you're thing drives me insane ... It's nothing to do with education: it's to do with a majority of people not regarding it as important. They will win, as language is elastic. Let's switch to Esperanto...

"

For us it's about compatibility with others."

Exactly this. If someone can't be bothered with a message what effort are they likely to make when arranging a meet? It probably doesn't matter too much if you are just intent on working your way though Fab, but we aren't so would rather engage with guys who can string a sentence together in the hope that we have somethings in common.

Hillside desolate

Couldn't give a single fuck if someone has bad grammar or spelling, as long as I know what they're saying and they're a decent person. I'm not here to find a pen pal.
