I've had this fitted for the first time at the grand old age of 37. Mainly to try and reduce heavy bleeding. I've got a little bit of stomach ache which I'm sure will pass. I was wondering what other peoples experience of having one is, please share if you're happy to do so.

I'm on my second. First one was ace, hardly bled, no pain or bother at all.

This one, I've been bleeding for 3 months, only very light, barely even a panty liners worth. Again, no pain.

They work for some and not others.

I have mine put in about a year ago and for the same reason as yours and it does take a few months to settle down but if it becomes painful then something is wrong and you can get it check out my periods are now really light and is great.

Ive had mine in for a year now. Had bleeding and cramp for a month or so and had no periods since. I have some cramp but its not as bad as it was. Its been the best thing so far for me

No major problems just need to go under to have this one removed as the strings have disappeared !

( scan from gyne spotted it)

No bleeding or pain at all such a relief

I’m so tempted but have PCOS and I’m meant to be getting scanned for endometriosis heard it helps some people but not others. I’m just worried because I had the implant and didn’t stop bleeding for months and my moods were crazy x

I hope the 'no bleeding' rings true for me too eventually. What about sex drive? I've heard reports it goes through the roof. Which is not good as I'm always as horny as a teenage boy anyway!!

Hated it!

After 9 months of almost constant bleeding, killer headaches, no libido, mood swings, bloating, joint pain, exhaustion, back cramps, forgetfulness to name a few. I told the clinic to remove it or I would do it myself, it wasn't an idle threat.

2 weeks post coil headaches gone, so were the back cramps, joint pain and my brain was almost useful again. But it took about 8 months before I was back to normal..... or my version or normal.

Unsurprisingly the Dr's don't tell you the possible side effects other than most women experience a few weeks of light bleeding and maybe mild cramps, but there can be a long and nasty list

Had one fitted earlier this year to sort out 3 periods a month and for the first 2 month I bled every day so it was even worse and I was considering having it removed. It’s all settled down now though and fingers crossed everything seems normal at once a month

Mine fell out after 18 months, which was bloody painful so I refused to have another one put in and am now quite happy on the depo injection which has totally stopped my periods (they didn't stop with the coil).

But I know lots of women who are coil converts and love theirs. I guess each body responds differently and you just have to see if it suits you.

I'm not happy, but interested but interested in how others are with it, as he was marketing it as a wonder cure for everything.

On my 3rd, 1st removed as they couldn't find the string, 2nd removed due to op and 3rd in now.

1st one had a few months of unsettled bleeding, but can't fault them.

So glad I chose them as I had very heavy irregular periods and cramps.

It should have no effect on sex drive as it only acts locally and doesn't flood the body with hormones like the implant or pill. maybe it's the freedom of worrying about pregnancy that makes you feel more horny?

Well said, any ache or pain or bleed, pain during sex or bleeding after sex should be checked by a doctor ASAP they can be signs of cervical cancer... Ladies get your smear tests done.

Had them for almost 7 years now. Best contraception I've found for lack of side effects and reduction in periods.

Me too but did take me six years to get it as ive no children..i refused the coil as it secretes a hormone that my body didnt like,same one as depo injection,really glad i refused as consultant made out it'd cure all...it wont..i chose an ablation and alls well now,all i can say is research your options thoroughly.

I’m on my third one. It’s been the best contraception for me. Reduced very heavy periods to almost nothing. The hormones don’t bother me like the pill did.

Think they agreed to sterilise me in my early 30s but I decided to carry on with the mirena coil. No kids and single but they were happy for me to have one

I had to come off Depo because it turned me into a psycho bitch from hell 3 weeks out of 4. Like seriously, 1 minute I was bouncing around like a giggly little thing, the next I was holding a knife to my wrists threatening to kill myself or anyone that came near me. So I'm not really keen to go through that again .

12 months of vaginal dryness and constant tendencies of BV. Most efficient contraception I've ever had as I was too embarrassed of the odour to sleep around.

Took revenge as soon as I got rid off it!

It took me six months and I have no children and wasn't in a relationship. I also refused the coil for the same reason.

It's worth knowing that GPs get a cash bonus for the amount of coils that they manage to fit into women and get them to keep for a certain amount of time. That's often why they're recommended over other types of medication.

Was also diagnosed with IBS while on it. It's due to the hormones. Now trying medical options with norathistarone.

Next step is ablation. Not a route I want to take.

My coil got infected, spent 4 days on an intravenous antibiotic drip in hospital. The pill messes with my depression too much, and know I don't want anymore children so something that will permanently stop monthly issues is very appealing.

The Mirena coil was hell for me, it was supposed to help with bleeding after my daughter was born and I ended up with a ‘reverse cycle’ (3 week bleed, 1 week off), anaemia, paranoia, anxiety, constant pain and the wires got tangled after it slipped and my boyfriend kept hitting it when we had sex. It works for some and not for others. I’ve been on the implant ever since and not had a single problem

Ablation wont permanently stop periods, they lije you to have 3 before deemed ok. Seriously to scar unterus and still bleed wtf. Im having laproscopic sub hysterectomy taking uterus & tubes but leaving ovaries & cervix (cortorising top of cervix) xx

worked great for me regarding stopping my periods

however regarding the side effects... hell on earth... put on loads of weight and suffered terrible anxiety and mood swings. when I had it removed the gynae said anxiety issues were a notorious issue with mirena but many GPS/nurses seem to not acknowledge the mirena as causing mental health side effetcs. Also for any ladies who have theres removed beware of the ;mirena crash'... very unpleasent to experience.

Ive since had a normal coil put in and ended up with ectopic!

I had my first fitted this year and the grand old age of 52

I have adenomyosis and it has helped dramatically and avoided a hysterectomy. Took a few weeks for the bleeding to settle

I suspected this might be the case as every time I went for a pill check they'd go on about it and being someone who doesnt react well to hormones i refused. In the end I got so sick of their insistence I bought my regular pill from an online pharmacy so i dont need to put up with their constant agro any more

Yes paid for consultation but also op as I need it done at specifics time to work around holidays. But you can do private consultation only, around £200 & then have OP done on NHS XX

Im a nurse, ues gps get cash depending on how many are fitted but this us becuase iuds are the gold standard in contraception and are urged by nhse to be used nationally.

when I went back to the gynae after getting my gp to remove the Mirena, she casually remarked that she hadn't been able to tolerate it either

Norethisterone? I take that and it does work but plays absolut havoc with my IBS.

At the moment I'm trying it as a cycle to regulate my periods.

Which is fine, but not suitable for all women. It is unethical to give doctors money for recommending a product that is not suitable for the patient.

Your period is when the lining of the uterus leaves your body. So if you no longer have a uterus then you will no longer bleed.

My wife has one fitted & I know how this is going to sound...not a 'humble brag'..but every now & then it pokes me on the glans when we are having sex...tad painful & off putting for me. In comparison to some of the issues mentioned in a very informative thread I know it is trivial, but thought I would mention it..

It can't poke your penis unless you are putting your penis through her cervix which would most likely mean she was in massive amounts of pain.

If it's hanging out of her cervix then it has dislodged and she should see a doctor.

Norethisterone? I take that and it does work but plays absolut havoc with my IBS.

At the moment I'm trying it as a cycle to regulate my periods. "

Have you tried progesterone cream?

Was recommended the Mirena coil for contraception after wright gain on Depo injections. 1st one mild cramps in first 24hrs great for 5 years afterwards. Was under general anaesthetic for fun as procedure and they changed coil at same time. Never settled ended up with BV infections. Finally got referred to a lovely surgeon who recommended an ablation but still said I'd need other contraception as well. He finally agreed to sterilize me at same time as ablation. 3yrs down the line no periods and no concerns about getting pregnant. Well worth the pain and discomfort I suffered!!

Does that mean you wouldn't need hrt but removes enough to stop the bleeding?

Your period is when the lining of the uterus leaves your body. So if you no longer have a uterus then you will no longer bleed. "

Thats why sugeon said he cortorises top of cervix thats staying so no bleed as if bits of uterus left behind its possible

He may be feeling the wires, they could have been cut too short and give him the occasional prod.

Didn't work for me at all. Got it for the same reason as you to ease off the bleeding a bit, but it really made it worse. Less severe, but irregular bleeding, bleeding after sex, sex with slightly larger people hurts. Stuck with it for a year and then had the thing removed. Now on the mini pill, which is fantastic!!! Haven't had a period since

This is because of the strings. I had the same problem. Nothing they can do if they've cut then too short unfortunately.

Guessing it is the strings then, it is only occasional, certain angles etc. Not a problem, but does ummm surprise at times!

Haha my partner at the time had the same problem. It always worried me about condoms. I used to check them after for holes. Got a bit paranoid

If your gp is anything like mine (well the male one) they'll tell you it's your age and you've got to suck it up!! Lasts about 10 years!! Female gp said I've got about 10 year until my menopause even starts!!!

If this was a male thing they'd have a cure!
