Spelling again ffs

We trawl through all this shit on these forums and some things make you gag and yawn whatever. But the most irritating thing is bad spelling. Why? because when you spell things incorrectly a red line appears under the mis-spelt word( like now because I added a hyphen) Then all you have to do is right-click your mouse and the correct spelling appears at the top. Click on that and job is done. You sometimes get the US spelling but that's ok. It works for everybody, even the dyslexic(please take note)

People may spell things wrong but I can usually understand what the intended word is. It’s hardly a massive issue, if you don’t like misspelling on posts then don’t read them

If you're on the mobile site you don't get the red line telling you you've made an error.

And bad spelling doesn't bother me in the slightest anyway.

Webster also "Americanized" a ton of words when he made his dictionary. It was at a time when many scholars thought America should differentiate itself from Britain. So the way we speak and write is a weird hybrid of old English and "modern" americanization.

I've been corrected by Marc

Webster didn't americanize the words himself, he just popularized changes that were already being argued for. Anyway, if you're interested you can read more on English language spelling reform.

No it doesn't, there is no red line appears on my Kindle fire and it autocorrects a lot of the time So stuff reads wrong. I have no autocorrect on my phone as it also changes stuff. I don't care if people can't spell, most of the time you can understand what people mean. Don't be so rude and non understanding to dyslexic members either. There's an easy answer, if you think the forums full of Shit, don't come on it.

The trouble is that if you do that and it brings up a choice of words to use then dyslexics don't know which to chose ! Also, as in my case, i don't use a spell check (for the reason mentioned above) so no red line appears.

I rarely know if i have spelt words wrong and to be honest, on a forum such as this one, i really don't care as i feel my comments are able to be understood despite me being dyslexic.

Because in America it's all about ME

At least you didn't call it american-english. Which is an oxymoron, by the way.

I don't ever call it American English. Only British people do that. In America we speak English...it's what you people speak here that needs a qualifier "

SPELT - is the past tense and past participle of spell. Mainly a UK thing. Also an awful tasting grain.

I thought [sic] is meant to be used only when you are quoting an original piece and you want to indicate that the error is in the original and isn't your own fault? I thought purposeful misspellings were meant to be denoted with a footnote (or a parenthetical note, depending on which style of citation you're using)?

I got pissed off with the reference of "even dyslexics". You can have whatever preferences you want I don't care, everyone is entitled to them. However it's extremely frustrating at how ignorant the general population is towards the specific learning difficulty dyslexia and just how misunderstood it is

So,the correct spelling is the traditional spelling? That's a reasonable point,I guess.

I wonder if,as the U was gradually being introduced, people had similar discussions about breaking with tradition.

As far as I understand it (and I don`t proclaim any expertise) both spellings where used until printing presses where invented and spelling started to become standardised. There is a brief mention in one of the links i posted about the development of spelling but I can`t remember if there is any reference to favourite specifically.

I'm offended by people who think they can be offended on my behalf.

As someone who had to attend a specialist school for children with dyslexia and dyspraxia the comment was not on your behalf at all but on my own behalf.

I would perhaps look a little further outwards then just yourself before jumping to conclusions .. But then again that logic of thinking could just be my dyslexia!

"

If you know about dyselxia then you should know the difference between the types of mistakes that are commonly attributable to dyslexia and those that are just damn laziness or things an average 6 year old knows. They are very different and the dyslexia card is tiresome in this 'debate'.

"This is one of my favorite subjects.I even have to go back over what I've written to correct my laptop when it puts an unwanted 'U' in words like favorite.

I was once told off,in very strict terms, because I don't leave a space after a comma or full stop.TBH,some people can be just a bit too fussy about these things, can't they?

Favourite is the correct English spelling.

And always has been?

Unless you are American, yes.

Somebody posted a link, earlier in the thread, to old English spellings.

Do you mean the links I posted about Shakespeares English?

We speak modern English and favourite has been the correct spelling for 100`s of years.

That's another good point, about the printing press.Making the written word more widely available and helping language to become standardised. Pretty much the same job that the internet is doing for us all today. maybe in a couple of hundred years there will be the same sort of discussions about lol,omg and lmfao. They are already accepted as part of the evolving language.

I am well aware of the "types of mistakes" but at no point have I ever engaged you in conversation on this topic or any other topic for the matter. I just merely replied to keyboard warrior that aimed their tiresome remarks towards me.

Now that we have all thrashed this subject to death can we add bad manners to the debate or is that best left to another forum post.

The sort of thing I mean was illustrated this morning when my wife and I were on our way to The Conservative Club for lunch and we met a chap who did not raise his hat when saying, "Good morning". What school did he attend?

We then observed another couple and the bounder had his hands in his pockets. His companion appeared to be speaking, in public, on one of those dreadful mobile telephones.

We were speechless.

There was nothing to indicate it was tongue in cheek though so it was taken (by me) as it appears and being as I'm dyslexic (and know that spell check doesn't work for me as a dyslexic and isn't available on Fab on my phone anyway) it just appears insensitive. I felt sorry for people reading it who struggle using the forums because they are dyslexic etc and when they read comments such as yours it might mean they no longer post messeges which is a shame because the forums need all the variety of people possible !

There are forum users far more dyslexic than you and they get along just fine because they are a nice combination of thick skinned and have a good sense of humour. If you read their posts you'll also see that the types of spelling mistakes they make are very different to the types people make out of laziness or ignorance. Actually their posts are very easy to read because the spelling is basically phonetic, which really isn't that hard to understand.

An insightful, interesting and funny read. One point to add - regardless of where you are, fab forum's, at your local pub or generally out and about, people judge you on your personality, looks and attitude. Op, if you have a problem with people's spelling that is your problem and you need to find a way of coping with it socially.

The image of having to take an apptitude test prior to sex is ridiculously funny...

Therein lies there difference between us. You think you are doing good by 'caring' about others. I think you do harm in the long-term by mollycoddling them, effectively degenerating their status to that of children. Naturally i don't expect you to agree with my analysis but it is not a conclusion i reached without deep consideration.

I'm dyslexic, and use my phone for this site. Here's the thing though, us poor dyslexic can't tell if it's spelt correctly or not, and it's not like we can chuck our phones at people to check for us. We just hope technology sorts it out for us.

To be fair i googled it but it make a good point

I'm dyslexic too, not severely but enough that i got extra time at school etc. It annoys me when people throw dyslexia as an excuse for why people write words like 'babez' on their profile. There is no excuse for that language.

Hiding in the shadows

" It works for everybody, even the dyslexic(please take note)"

Did you mean to make that last line sound offensive, or did you not think it through first?

I'm dyslexic, and I take great pride in making sure my spelling & grammar is correct, but I use the mobile app on my phone, often auto carrot kicks in & changes words without me realising especially when try to type a quick reply

I guess it works well as a filter both ways.

If you find someone's lack of talent in the spelling department offensive, you can avoid them!

If you don't like pretentious people with a superiority complex, you can avoid them!

Is there any need to advertise in the forums, just how clever you think you are and, how stupid you think others to be?

Get over yourself!
