OK this maybe a waste of time but hey it doesn’t hurt to ask, has anybody tried this when playing and what problems did you run into.

I was hoping to rely on depth of field.

my 450d will autofocus in live view you have to press and hold down the left hand zoom button in the right hand corner of the back of the camera. Not sure if it's the same for all canons.

I'll give that a try as we have the same camera.

I had to look up Live View to find out what it was and OMG why bother!

How painful! Mirrors flipping all the time!

That's what compact cameras are for! And noting that Live View requires the mirror down to Auto Focus, so you'd have really play with focal range and that probably means loosing the sleek narrow depth of field that makes sexy photos look really stunning. They'll look like a photo taken on a fixed lens compact!

Sorry, been a pro photog and won awards, Live View sounds terrible, probably why I've never researched it before! I worry about sensor type, mirror speed, shutter speed and all the important thinks that make a DSLR as close to old film as possible!

Now on a DSLR with HD video ... the mirror up is critical

it can be useful in certain situations, but I think it was introduced for those used to having a compact.
