Things you remember from your childhood that won't come back (good or bad) even for your kids?

Mine,

Penny sweet tray at local shop.

Going to phone box with 10 P to call home.

Having to be home before street lights went off.

Remembering our first TV, 3 channels,no remote, just knobs, and a crappy Ariel on top that you had to twist round and hold in the air to get a good picture.

Corporal punishment at school

Junior..The slipper on the ass in front of School Assembly, which I had. The cane on your backside or leather strap on your hands, which I had.

Making your own entertainment, using imagination as video games, internet was not invented.

Going to the library once a week with mum to choose books.

Family home cooked meals around the family table (no microwaves or ready meals)

Watching Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnie's, George and Mildred.. and more as a family with sandwiches on a Saturday tea time.

Cheap family holidays to Cornwall in a cottage or caravan.

Xmas day.. a couple of presents or a few.. books, board games, action man & one of my dad's old socks at the end of the bed, with a bar of chocolate, an apple an orange and 50 pence.

Cooking and baking with mum and my two sister's.

Going to watch Saturday Matinee at Halifax Odeon Cinema as a family (Odeon now shut many years ago) You got two films, with cartoons like Bugs Bunny in between and an intermission, when a woman came round with ice cream. Remember going to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Herbie and Mary Poppins there.

Our first video game. A Binatone. One of those with a black screen and white sticks.. tennis, basketball ball, ping pong etc.

My first record player. It was one of those in a "faux leather" box. It opened up and you put your 45 singles or LP's onto the spindle and they dropped down one at a time.

Listening to the Top 4O on my transistor radio.

My first Sunday morning paper round at 13. Massive heavy bag, took me an hour and a half in all weathers. Got 90 pence.

Earning extra pocket money. Washing dad's car, cleaning shoes, washing up.

Might remember more. But we were happy. It wasn't about the cost, as many didn't have much. It was all about family and entertaining yourselves.

It's a shame that technology, internet, fast living, materialism have many younger ones less appreciative of what they have. It's all too easy and expected as a right.

Feel free to add your teenage years..

First girlfriend, School discos, the advent of punk, ska. Your first date, car, job, whatever..

My first job was a Youth Training Scheme as an apprentice Mechanic and paint sprayer. I had one day a week at college. The other 4 daysay work. I got £25 a week and an extra £5 for going in on a Saturday morning to sweep up and tidy tool boxes. I paid my Mum £10 a week board.

I remember all those things op - but we DID have a tv remote in our house! It was me - because I was the youngest! No joke - Dad would call me from another room to come and change channels because he couldn’t be arsed to get up!

Sweets which had cost 1/2p costing 1p the day that the halfpenny ceased to be legal tender.....

The slightly musty smell of the library, where I went every two weeks to get a book or two.

Only three channels on TV, and no daytime TV (far better than what we have now)

Parents who trusted me to be back "before it gets dark" or "before tea"

Shopping at the butcher and greengrocer...the supermarket was for tins, cat food and frozen peas.

I lived the first home computer boom...still have a Sinclair ZX81 and Spectrum set up to this very day. I remember actually designing games and writing them with friends rather than simply playing them....thinking I had invented software piracy in 1981 when I hooked two cassette recorders together to dub ZX81 cassettes....

The video revolution....as a young child there was no viable way to record TV to watch later. By 11 my parents had a VCR...by 14 I had one....now nobody watches TV as scheduled!
