What unit of measurement do you prefer?

I think by having both in use it is causing far too much confusion.

For me the metric system would be an easier option - so much easier to work with 10's, Particularly for the younger generation.

Maybe this is why cock size is so hard to fathom? I mean let's be honest here, how many of those 8/9"+ cocks have been a 'little' disappointing when you've seen it in the flesh?

Maybe it's because inches are not such an easy unit for measurement?

A single unit system may be better, abolish the imperial units and stick to metric - I'm sure it will make measuring cock size, parallel parking, fitting carpets, joinery etc much easier.

Which would you go for?

I often use imperial when I'm baking because a lot of the recipes I use are too old to be in metric. When I'm sewing I use metric. When measuring cocks I use the "oh scale"

I've grown up as most have with both. For me I prefer the metric system for measuring. But on the flip side I would rather use lbs and oz's for weighing......Maybe I'm just mixed up. Lol

I have no clue when it comes to measurements.

I know I’m 5’6 in height but if someone said for example, walk 50 yards down the road, I’d have no idea how far 50 yards was

No wonder I had to take my Maths O Level three times before I passed it

As an engineer I use metric most of the time but sadly have to mix imperial measurements too as I deal with a lot of American companies so I mix and match.

I do like the “oh” scale though although trying to explain that one at work may be a bit tricky!!

Yes I agree metric should become the standard norm. But the cost of replacing the road signs would be exorbitant so it won't happen any time soon. At least until the last generation that was taught on the Imperial standard passes away.

I use metric at work....because that's how it's done. However my brain tends to work in imperial.

Example if someone says they are 6'2" and 18 stone...,I know they're a big lad.

1.81m and 98kg doesn't seem to equate in the same way.

Boobs for example.... 38DD .... I can visualise that! 98cm..... wtf?

If I'm cooking from a recipe I tend to use the metric weights if both are given but if I don't use a recipe I always use imperial

I use metric and imperial depending on the situation and don't get confused (usually).

Imperial for people's height, size and weight plus for room sizes, clothing and distance.

Metric for buying household goods, general sizing and food shopping.

This might explain why the three piece we got turned out to be too big to easily fit in the living room though

Snow should be in inches.

Imperial measures are derived from objects.

An inch is the top part of your thumb. A foot is based on a foot. Cubits, spans, fathoms, furlongs, miles etc. Most have stories to why they came to be.

This makes them easy to visualise.

Metric is created logically to be easy to combine with other measures.

I can use both happily.

If I'm measuring something to be cut or to fit a certain spot then I use metric. If I'm giving someone a rough size guide verbally then I'll use imperial.

8 feet is easier to visualise than 2440mm

The UK government endorsed the metric system in 1965 before the EEC even existed. We've been gradually moving towards Standardisation ever since. You and I are of similar age and we were taught the metric system at school. I guess the old fashioned imperial system will hang around for another 50 years or so until our generation passes on.

It stems back to riding horses apparently, and passing in the left, your weapon is in your right hand in case of attack.

But just like the older generation who refuse to let go, (banking cheque/inches etc). We refuse to adopt a new or argumentative, a better way of doing something.

My father was involved in a study of changing the sides of the road to drive on many years ago.

I think it was Norway that dud this most recently, in the sixties I believe.

Back then there was way less cars on the road in Norway, and not such a big infrastructure but the logistics were immense.

Such as repositioning signs, altering slip roads on and off etc.

There were of course a multitude of accidents due to people forgetting when they swapped sides.

Amplify that by the amount of right hand drive cars on the UK roads and the cost of altering and repositioning the road signs and altering all the slip road etc.

Then the invariable cost of the carnage that will ensue with people forgetting and the difficulty in overtaking with the driver on thewrong side and the study was quietly buried.

I knew that we had the metric system but thought it was the EU that insisted we use metric in shops not the UK...

I will continue to use mph and convert litres into gallons to work out how economical my car isn't...

Every time my builder talks about millimetres or metres I have to say sorry what’s that in English.

I wasn’t taught metric at school and it still doesn’t mean too much to me. If someone says something is 50 miles away I know exactly how far that is if I’m given that in kilometres I haven’t got a scooby
