I've had bipolar now for over 20 years and I have my ups and downs but lately I've felt really ill, no sex drive, can't sleep and just don't want to get up or dressed anymore.

My company was recently took over and my new boss is a complete bitch and making my life a hell at the moment. She doesn't know I'm BP as it's never been an issue at work before but I feel so low I'm frightened of going off sick at work and getting the sack.

At a loss what to do right now.

They can't sack you for being off sick unless you're in a trial. Did you go through that TUPE malarkey?

TUPE?"

Yeah, when my place got taken over it was like an agreement kind of thing that meant time you'd worked for the previous company etc still counted on the new one. You kept holidays earned and all that. So even though I've technically only worked for my new company 2 yrs, it's classed as 8 coz it counts the 6 I worked for the old one.

It's a transition thing.

Does your company have a HR department?

If they do speak to them and explain about your BP and how your new boss is making things worse for you.

If there is no HR speak to your new boss's senior.

Your BP is considered to be a disability and your employer is required to support you and make any reasonable adjustments you need. They can't help you if they don't know about it.

If you need to take time off work then you must. Your health and wellbeing is far more important that going to work.

Hugs xxx

Sadly not in my case.

2 things really- your health and your job. if you have been dealing with your condition I can imagine that you know what helps you during your low mood. but its always worth being reminded of previous coping strategies- so use them! or see if mass need to be adjusted or the like.

you shouldn't be sacked because of an illness- especially when you say that its never been an issue at work so I assume you haven't been off sick with it (at least recently). so take some time off to focus on your health. if you feel that you are treated unfairly- HR, union or the like are usually pretty good. companies are supposed to make reasonably adjustments for health conditions- might be that you discuss with work that you start a bit later in the morning if they are especially difficult?

Probably better to go and speak to your Dr. rather than seeking advice here.

Up on them there hills

Agree, doctor, the system is what it is, as has been said, TUPE is on your side.

You will soon be at ease with this and come out of in a great place.

Mega hugs lady

I had this with where I work. Was made to re-apply for my job 4 times in as many years! Was put under lots of stress, awful boss and was frequently reminded how lucky I was to have a job. Ended up being threatened with non compliance as my job was becoming impossible. I took over the work of 3 other people who were laid off but had less time to hit more targets. I ended up walking out and didn't go back for 8 weeks. Got signed off on the sick. Focussed on my life and spent time with family as I became a total irritable stranger. Returned to work and they backed off. In a way i wishbi hadn't walked out buy i couldn't take any more. They now think i'm a ticking time bomb and may walk at any time. I crossed the line which kind of worked in my favour. I've always worked all my life but this job gave me serious depression. I'm looking for a new job now. I did find solace at the gym and running. Do you have any hobbies OP? Hope you get well soon!

I've bipolar too and it can be a bitch to live with. You can't be sacked for being ill so don't worry about that. You do need to talk to your employees though as support in the workplace can be offered and certain allowance made. Increase in medication may help you through this rough patch.

Hope things get better for you

You may not get sacked but I'd be pissed off as an employer if you didn't tell me. They pay you and want you to work or provide a service. Talk to them....its in both your interests x

Did you declare your bipolar on your application for the job?? If so they don't have a chance to sack you. If not I'm not to sure about what would happen. As most have said get to docs and make sure you get better

Good luck with it. Does your mediation need reviewing? Sound like you might need more of what you're already on or a change?

I agree but there's still a lot of stigma around mental health. It obviously depends on each individual case but sometimes people staying quiet can be the right thing. Sounds like the OP has made the right choice though and hopefully her manager will be better with her

I myself also suffer with Bipolar and have been in a position where the company I worked for did not believe that I was being signed off due to mental health condition. Got so bad I walked out and now work for myself so I do not have to deal with it, although that can have many downsides.

I understand your worry about being sacked but your health comes first. If you get to a point where you are so low, you will be unable to work anyway. If they threaten you with dismissal, approach ACAS and see what they can suggest for you.

I hope it all works out for you in the end hunni xx

If your original boss knew then I should have thought that it would be mentioned in your company record? I could be wrong but I am not sure if they would include your medical records when they passed your file to the new employer (if they passed files at all).

I hope all goes well for you and that you start to feel more like yourself soon

I'm currently off on the sick for mental health issues. I thought the same about my boss but when I eventually sat down she was nothing but supportive. Current been off three weeks and when I go back I'm in a different department to help with my recovery. Sometimes it's scarier to sit there than it actually is to bite the bullet. I was horribly anxious for days before and during. But once it'd had finished it was like a release. Like a weight had been lifted. It's becoming less taboo and more people understand now. Not all but some. Sending a lot of love sweet. Hope you feel better soon cxx
